La ADM fue concebida por Carlos Chávez -primer director general del INBAL de 1947 a 1952- como un taller de experimentación de la nueva danza mexicana. En esta etapa inicial funcionó como compañía y taller coreográfico; posteriormente se convirtió en un espacio de creación y producción artística fundamental durante la llamada Época de oro de la danza moderna mexicana.
