"Day of the deadIn my childhood I lived in a house right in downtown, during these days it was always full of colors and tradition, a total rejoicing.We'd start shopping well in advance, Mamasarita used to take all her grandsons and granddaughters to get "los muertitos" little clay skulls and decorations for our Altar.It was all made from scratch at home, mole, nicuatole (a kind of jello made with corn), calabaza (pumpkin), tejocotes en miel (tiny apples in sweet)..... The big patio was full of burners and "apasles" (traditional big clay pots). Many hands were required and the whole family would participate.Those were very fun days, specially on the 31st. when Mimi would bring out her histrionic qualities and big imagination to make us tremble and fly away scared by her stories, her custome and scary piano notes by the candles light. I was never able to hear the end of any story because I'd be crying hiding in my mom's arms.Everything was ready for the 1st. (Nov. 1st) all the family and friends would come to eat, that was the best day to enjoy the exquisite mole and unbeatable sweets. The assistants would participate in a "calaverita" (short verses referred to dead, often comical) contest, the best one would win a casserole of mole.The 2nd was dedicated to a visit to the cemetery to offer a pray and leave flowers on each of our departed loved ones graves and after that eat as much as possible of what was offered by the street vendors outside the cemetery. The last time I went to get "mis muertitos" with Mamasarita was in 2016, I was pregnant and had a feeling that that was the last time this beautiful old lady would accompany me in this activity, I widely opened my eyes trying to save in my memory those moments walking through Benito Juarez market... Oh how I miss you! But I know you are rejoicing in a better place. Here you left a great legacy and it is our turn to keep our beautiful traditions, most of all with our faith and love to God.Everything has changed now, we can't even go out or get together, but at least in my home I will do my best to prepare all the dishes and to make sure we teach our daughters what a blessing and fortune it is to have been born in this land and in this family.Happy Day of the dead!!!!!!"From my friend Mariló Avendaño Rivera ? ...
