We did a PCR test that was way too expensive. We were promised that we would get a bill for the health insurance, but to date we haven't received one and we will never get one. Definitely a rip off. Rather go to other doctors to do a PCR test. The whole staff is extremely rude. Doctors just want to make money without really helping you. Actually, you become a doctor to help people and not to rip off people unscrupulously.

I recently had abdominal surgery as an in-patient. The entire process from billing arrangements, pre-op appointments, actual surgery day went smoothly. The hospital administration worked with my insurance company for a guarantee of payment and were very willing to do so. The surgery is a great success with minimal to no pain. I took a shower the day after surgery! An absolutely positive experience. Thank you, AmeriMed!

Please Run! Money hungry hospital! My mother had an accident at xcaret and we were transported to this hell hole by default. I can’t even begin to go in details of how everything was about money first. We had travel insurance and they couldn’t wait for the insurance to kick in but requested we pay 6k US dollars on the spot or we leave while my mother needed life saving oxygen. They waited till around 10:30pm to fax my travel insurance the hospital records (we came in at 2pm) and then decided an half hour later to demand money upfront. Long story short, I ended up paying $3300 usd plus and was still put out at 12am midnight. We had to pay for a private ambulance $500usd to take us to Cancun where I had to keep my mom until the next day to get admitted to another hospital. I’ll always remember what this place did in a time of total despair. Run if you’re a tourist. Only nice people were the cardiologist and daytime security guard who allowed my 11 year old to sleep outside on the sofa while they detained us because they refused to wait for the insurance to do a payment guarantee due to the late documentation they sent.

I thought I had broken my leg at a resort in Tulum. I was able to message Dr Lopez via WhatsApp from the taxi. He was reassuring on the phone and upfront about costs.. I was immediately processed and taken to the x-ray. Dr. Lopez was very knowledgeable and experienced. I was in and out within an hour.

This Hospital is a SCAM. Read from another traveler: I want to share a horrible experience with the hospital amerimed here in Playa del Carmen . They kept me captive against my will for 9 hours . I had a simple planed surgery there on my leg paid with my insurance MetLife . I needed to spend 5 hours in the hospital from 5am to 10am. The the insurance company had an approval letter ahead of time and also sent a final approval of the hospital charges by email to the hospital at 12pm. Usually you need the final approval to be discharged from the hospital . .So here comes a typical scam of foreigners. The hospital tells me that they did not receive this letter and cannot discharge me . I called my Insurance several times , they even sent the same letter to me. But they said that the rules dictate that it must come from the insurance itself . So I was kept captive in my hospital room for 9 hours against my will( doctor discharged me at 11 am ). I tried to leave several times and got Assaulted by the security guards . They pushed me and threatened to hit me . They wanted me to pay 80,000 pesos cash in order to leave or wait until my insurance send them the letter which’s they did more than once . I called my lawyer and she said it’s considered kidnapping . So as an act of desperation I called 911 in front of the hospital’s front desk and they heard the entire call . 5 minutes later someone runs up to me and says the letter has arrived. Which Is very strange indeed . They asked me to call back and cancel my report . They had this letter since 12 pm and were screwing my brains so I get desperate and pay the 80000 pesos to go home . While the insurance covered 100% of the cost with proper paperwork. They were hoping to get the insurance and 80,000 pesos in cash (card payment was not an option ) .I consider this as an act of extortion .Do not fall for the same things if you have insurance . The hospital cannot keep you away from leaving , even without pay . It’s illegal and they do it only to foreigners . Just like in other countries , they must make payment arrangements in writing . But they cannot keep you captive until you pay or the insurance pays . Even if the insurance is moving slowly . Be ware of amerimed. I had better experience in playa med and in Hospiten using my insurance .

I feel so sorry to read all those bad reviews while I had an amazing experience, even excellent. First of all it is important to have a health insurance, communicate with them before you leave on holiday what to do when you are ill or in danger. Collect all the information you need in advance so the moment itself you will not experience delay or resentment. Also, you need a credit card so you can pay a deposit. This will be on hold on your card and will be released on your dismissal when everything with your insurance is settled. Do not stress about this! Be aware that the amount of your credit card is more than enough. You can even ask for an extra form that the hospital will release the money on your card as soon as possible. I live on the other side of the world in Europe, so communication due time difference had a small delay. Indeed, you have to wait some time in between while the hospital treats you, this is because someone external is paying for your costs and needs to give an ‘okay’ for every action. So, you are all depending on each other. It’s understandable if you don’t have an insurance, a treatment can not be done and feels not fair. Therefor, check your options before you leave on a holiday, especially in another country. The hospital itself is GREAT. The emergency, the doctors, the nurses, the tests, the room, the food,…It felt like being in heaven while being in such a bad physical state. My husband and I want to thank all the people who made me better again from the bottom of our hearts. We hope that everyone can experience what we had, but please, check everything you need before you leave for your getaway. The hospital really wants to help, but we are unfortunately stuck in a system and this works differently in every country. I got the right prescriptions to recover after a stay of 3 days with a colonoscopy, so I can enjoy the rest of my holiday. It’s true you have to wait for your release in the hospital, but that has only to do with the finalisation between the insurance and hospital. The insurance has to acknowledge the ending of your treatment, as the hospital still not has full certainty of the whole payment. I hope everyone gets an equal opportunity to enjoy universal health care in the future. Cheers and love for humanity!

We were at a waterpark (Xel-ha) when my wife stated having trouble breathing. After a visit to the first aid tent, the staff advised she needed to go to the hospital in an ambulance ASAP, so I chose Amerimed. Then I got there and started reading all of the horrible reviews AND I BECAME TERRIFIED. They require $2000 up front before they start ANYTHING. They don’t want to deal with insurance: they want cash. I sat there and worried like crazy while I imagined the worst: we’d be stuck there for days, at their mercy, not knowing if anything they tell me is true, or if they’re just trying to milk me for every penny I had. Long story short…they found a little pneumonia after a chest X-ray, gave us several prescriptions, and dealt with us professionally. I ultimately left happy after paying a total of $1850. I read so many horror story review that I was freaking out, but ultimately we left happy and felt like they treated us completely fairly

i also was @ xel ha with wife snorkeling down river when she went in to cardiac arrest..sent here Dr.s are good BUT ADMINISTASION WAS BRUTAL dealing with our insurance wanting $ down from 2000 walking in then rising up to 50.000. insurance co guarenteed paymt.but was not good enough for them after talks lasting hrs. of B.S.the let me go and have 2 hrs sleep i felt black mailed..dont give them $ out of own pocket even if you got 50.ooo ..as i said even with a great ins. co.they were ruthlesd
