★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a nice place to have breakfast, the meals have good taste and beverages as chocolate and traditional champurrado from oaxacan cuisine but they doesn't offer the traditional bread. The service isn't good and take long to take the order and to serve.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful setting in garden with food which was both traditional and inventive. One of our best meals in Oaxaca and that is saying a lot!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Delicious meal, good drinks! Tetela was delicious and unique. Chamorro with chichilo sauce was very tasty and served with risotto, vegetables, and some little maize dumplings! I wold have liked to have tried dessert, but I was too full. Service was wonderful, and the restaurant is beautiful and unique.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice experience here for dinner. We got one chamurro and a pork chuleta. Both were delicious. The sauces were great.
Loved the spicy cheese and tostadas served before our meal.
Service was great.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Came to Ancestral on the first night of my month long stay in Oaxaca. Went back 3 more times! The courtyard is very pretty at night. The first night I came there was live music, which was really nice! Everything I’ve had has been good but why did I keep coming back? THE PANQUE DE ELOTE! I tried several other places for pan de elote and quickly realized Ancestral’s was special! So moist, not overly sweet and just delicious!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I really wanted to love this place! There were two restaurants in Oaxaca that I was really excited about and this was one. The idea of the prehispanic cuisine is enticing and the photos look spectacular. Unfortunately I think this restaurant may have become stale. The food is totally mediocre, the flavours lack depth and there seems to be a real lack of passion to it although the corn bread dessert was good.
The weirdest part about the restaurant is the service. The staff seem really disorganised and also unhappy. I had to ask for almost everything twice, sometimes it would arrive, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes I'd get two. I had about 5 different waiters, no one seemed to know what had been done or hadn't been done. I was asked for my dessert order before I finished my main course, I asked for recommendations and all they said each time was "really yummy" but couldn't seem to describe or explain the dishes.
It feels like there is a boredom in the air here and that's really sad because from what I've read they used to teem with passion!
Top tip: bring bug spray

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing food!!
Enjoyed every moment.
Great cocktails and smart dishes. The feta cheese with jalapeños is incredible surprise!
The only reason I didn’t give 5 starts- the drinks service is super slow.
