★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Con la llegada de nuevos inmigrantes cubanos a México en 1868 y después con la intensificación de la guerra de Independencia en la isla de Cuba (la Guerra de los Diez años), en los años de 1876 y 1895 se embarcan a más personas a Veracruz, entre ellos inversionistas.
Estos inversionistas adquieren interés por algunos estados de México como Veracruz y Oaxaca, ya que presentaban condiciones muy similares a las sierras del clima de Vuelta Abajo, una zona destacada por su producción tabacalera en Cuba.
Aunque en México ya se fabricaron puros no contaban con la calidad del producto que se realizaba en Cuba, y es con la llegada de estos inmigrantes que se puede mejorar la producción. Uno de estos inmigrantes era Ramón Balsa (familia de origen Español), mismo que entre los años 1864 y 1870 funda en el puerto la empresa tabacalera Balsa Hermanos la cual nombro “La prueba”.
Hubo un evento impulso el éxito de la empresa hasta llegar a convertirla en la más importante del país. Se dice que un indígena chinanteco llega a los Portales de Veracruz ofreciendo una hoja muy aromática y elástica de tabaco, ahí se encontraba Ramón Balsa y se sorprende por como los indígenas obtenían esta hoja con sus técnicas tan rudimentarias.
Tras este evento decide navegar a Tuxtepec, para poder llegar hasta la cabecera de San Juan Bautista Valle Nacional en busca de la planta y convertirse así, en pionero en exploración de tierras para cultivar tabaco. Tiempo después, a fines del siglo XIX existen registros de que logró contar con 6,000 hectáreas en su rancho dedicadas a la siembra de tabaco.
En la estructura de la fábrica, podemos apreciar 2 pisos, siendo la planta de abajo destinada a oficinas, almacenes y el área de empaque, y en el segundo piso se llevaban a cabo las operaciones de la Industria. Hoy en día podemos apreciar el hermoso coral con el que se fabricaron parte de sus muros.
Conto con sucursales en Puebla, y su tabaco estaba destinado venderse tanto en México como Inglaterra, Centroamérica, Sudamérica, Estados Unidos y Europa.
