BBVA has atm machines throughout Riviera Maya. Several of them are in RIU resorts. I needed some Mexican pesos and decided to use my Fidelity debit card which has 1% foreign exchange fee and refunds the atm fee back to me. I have used it many times in Europe and what European banks do is to charge Fidelity the exact Euro and the atm fee separately. Fidelity then uses that days exchange rate to convert into dollors and gives me credit for the atm fee. When I got 800 pesos from the ATM at the RIU resort, it told me the fee was 99 pesos which was about $5 with that day's exchange rate of 20 pesos to a dollar. After I checked my Fidelity account, I noticed that BBVA had charged my Fidelity account $48.37 for $40 worth of pesos. It apparently used its own ridiculous exchange rate which resulted in $43.37 instead of $40 plus $5 atm fee. So, it's exchange fee was 9 to 10%. Please do not use BBVA atm machine's unless you want to be ripped off.
