El segundo nombre, Guerrero se retomó en honor al insurgente don Vicente Guerrero héroe de la Independencia, también poch: humo-neblina y tlan: lugar.
Putla en 1907 se convierte en cabecera distrital, anteriormente pertenecía al distrito de Juxtlahuaca, siendo gobernador del estado el Lic. Emilio Pimentel, se separa este distrito de Juxtlahuaca a causa del homicidio del juez mixto de primera instancia en aquel lugar a manos de Heliodoro Carrasco.
