★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Impressive ruins deep in the forest (80min drive through biosphere on good tarmac road from Chetumal - Escarcega highway) with a view of Guatemala. Had a Polish and French group there at the same time which slightly spoiled the experience. Anyways, the complex is big enough and it's still way better than the other sites in neighbouring Yucatan or Palenque. 3-4h was enough time for us to explore all structures. You pay twice - 310MXN in total per person. Don't miss the bats for sunset at km 106!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not too many people and very good preserved sights. Also, the chance of finding wildlife is great.
Negative (though I did not let it influence the rating, as it is not the government's fault) is the organisation of the entrance fee and the fee you have to pay in order to get to the ruins (at early 22 about 240 Mex. Pesos). To clarify: you have to pay about 150 pesos p.P. to even get to the ruins entrance, where you pay 85 p.P., again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's not much less than two hours drive from Xpujil ( which itself is the middle of nowhere) but totally worth it for an amazing site
The entrance gate is nearly 60km West of Xpujil on the main road ( you can't miss it) .. From the entrance gate the access road is another 60km to the car park for the ruins ( then about 15 minutes walk)
Despite some of the reviews here and other information talking about dirt roads the road in from the highway is totally paved .. First 20km is wide and straight, final 40km narrower and winding but all of it is well surfaced with only the occasional pothole .. Apart from the time needed to drive it is not an issue in any normal car

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best Mayan ruins in Yucatan. Hidden in the middle of a jungle and far from tourist attractions. Come here early in the morning and enjoy being alone in the site. Morning time is also better for observing animals. Use proper shoes as there are tarantulas and snakes, keep in mind you are in the jungle.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ BREATHTAKING VIEW!
Calakmul is one of the greatest archeological sites I have visited so far! It’s not so easy to get there, but this is one of the reasons that makes this place special. We started early in the morning from Bacalar with a rental car, the road is in good conditions until you leave the highway close to Conhuas. From here it’s 60km on a narrow road with some pot holes, but over all it is an asphalt road in acceptable conditions. I thought the road would have been way worth after all the reviews and comments on how to get to Calakmul. The archeological site is in really good conditions and you can climb all the way up on the pyramids. If you see the view, you know that it was more than worth the travel! The spectacular view with rainforest as far as you can see in every direction is breathtaking and we have seen more monkeys than visitors while we were there. To complete the review, we drove all the way to Merida and arrived there in the evening.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What an amazing place!!! The best Mayan ruins I've visited so far. It takes a lot of effort to get here but it's totally worth it! The road to get here is 60 kms long starting from the main road. For 20 kms the speed limit is 60 km/h and for the remaining 40 kms it is 30 km/h. So it will take at least 1 hour 30 minutes to get here from the main road (close to Conhuas town). The road is perfectly paved and you can get here even driving a big van. The ruins are just amazing because you can access almost every part of them, climb the pyramids and explore the trails. There are supposed to be restrictions for Covid but nobody really checks so you can go and explore the whole site (all 3 routes: short, medium and long). There were really few visitors when we were there. Also the price is pretty fair! At the entrance to the road to Calakmul you'll need to pay 160 pesos. Then 85 pesos more at the site to get in. Total of 245 pesos. Totally worth it!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Incredible experience to be able to mount the ruins. Many monkeys and other wild birds. Incredible view of the forest up there (and of Guatemala I believe). Watch out it’s very very hot and there is no shade on the ruins- you can only buy water and food at the front desk (60km away from the ruins). We didn’t see much wildlife on the road to the ruins. Don’t forget to stop at KM27 and do the little tour to see the crocodiles and some of their wild birds !

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A little bit of a lengthy drive to the ruins, but in the end the entry fee and the drive there is absolutely worth it. An amazing walk through the jungle with a lot of wildlife and amazing historical monuments. More than 10 structures, and one of the few you can climb. The view from the top of structure two is just breathtaking.
