About Calli Language School (Centro de Idiomas)
Puerto Escondido has never been just a beach town.
The history of the region dates back millennia but the name Puerto Escondido itself is linked to the age of piracy. In 1579 Sir Francis Drake and his brothers John and Andrew were ducking Spanish patrols and looting the coast of Southern México. While anchored in the bays of Huatulco, Andrew kidnapped a beautiful young Mixteca girl named Josefa. He continued north until he reached our local shores. In the middle of the night Josefa slipped past her guards and leapt into the sea. Andrew ordered patrols to recapture her but all they found were footprints in the sand and the impassable jungle beyond. Months passed and Andrew continued sending patrols but to no avail. To him she was Josefa. To those he sent in search of her, she was La Escondida, the hidden one.
Since those early days as a pirate hideout, La Bahia de la Escondida (later Puerto Escondido) has reinvented itself many times over; shipping port for coffee and black market gold, sleepy fishing village, international surf destination, and through it all, it has held tightly to its history and independent spirit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gracias por todo Adriana!! To learn a language you need to know the foundations and my teacher Adriana was so amazing at helping me learn them. After completing the 10 hour package with her, I felt like I had the right tools I needed to start speaking in Spanish and also continue learning the language. Before the classes, I was very nervous and avoided speaking Spanish. Now I am more confident and want to practice speaking with anyone who will listen!! Donna was also especially kind and helpful in arranging a class for me that fit my schedule and my learning needs. Thank you again to the team at Cali :) I recommend this school, in particular my teacher Adriana, to anyone who wants to learn Spanish!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I did about 12 hours of Spanish with Donna at Calli. I am a professor and so have taken lots of courses and taught a lot too. In my opinion Donna is a superb language teacher. She is highly skilled (speaking four languages fluently). Her school is well resourced with other teachers, books, and materials. Her classes were fun, interesting, and informative especially because Donna is well read, highly educated, and very personable. She brings her enthusiast spirit (along with a slightly wicked sense of humour) into the class room every day so it was always fun to learn. As well, Donna, in class, taught me a lot about her culture, about the history of Mexico and shared much about her own life. I have not tried other Spanish language schools but did learn french several years ago and had superb teaching from alliance franchise language teachers. Donna is up there with the best of them. I can't say enough good things about my experience at Calli.
