Zimatlán de Álvarez, fue fundado por los años 1558 a 1560 por el ilustrísimo Sr. Obispo Fray Bernardo Acuña de Alburquerque, a partir de esta fecha este pueblo creció rápidamente en importancia. Primero se llamó Tepetcimatlán que en español significa "Lugar en la raíz del Monte",en zapoteco Guichihuio "Pueblo de guayabas", ó Guixihuio "Monte de guayaba" predominando el nombre de Zimatlán que en español significa "Tierra de raíces".
Zimatlán de Álvarez, was founded between 1558 and 1560 by the illustrious Mr. Bishop Fray Bernardo Acuña de Alburquerque, from this date this town grew rapidly in importance. It was first called Tepetcimatlán, which in Spanish means "Place at the root of the Mountain", in Zapotec Guichihuio "Town of guavas", or Guixihuio "Mount of guava" predominating the name of Zimatlán which in Spanish means "Land of roots".
