I had brunch down the street at the huge 60-peso buffet and then stopped here to buy some samples of Oaxaca chocolate on the way back to my hotel. There are chocolate places everywhere around here. They're "factories" by name, places with grinders and grinder paraphernalia in which chocolate, almonds and whatnot are ground into a dusty mountain and then somehow made into chunks and wrapped in aluminum foil. I bought five wrapped chunks. I had never tried Mexican chocolate before apart from what's in a Carlos V or a Nugs. Each chunk was five pesos. Or was that 25 pesos? I think 5. I brought them to my room, giving one to the friendly desk clerk as I went by . The chocolate chunks have the hardened consistency of sand. They're grainy and awful. I don't know who'd want to eat them or what I'd do with a kilo of them. But such it was. And all the time I was doing all this, the young boy kept vigil over his uninflated balloons on the sidewalk in front of my hotel as he does every day for about 18 hours.
