El bruxismo es una enfermedad que provoca movimientos en los músculos que usamos para masticar, generando que apretemos o rechinemos nuestros dientes. Por las noches el bruxismo se manifiesta de manera inconsciente mientras dormimos, y generalmente se relaciona con el estrés.
Diagnosticar el bruxismo es relativamente sencillo para cualquier dentista, basta con observar zonas desgastadas en el esmalte dental, y escuchar del propio paciente que al despertar tiene dolor en la zona de las mejillas.
Otra manera de saber que el paciente rechina o aprieta los dientes es por medio de su pareja, ya que es frecuente escuchar de ellos que han sido testigos de cómo rechinan sus dientes de manera frecuente al dormir.
Existen estudios más complejos que pueden analizar el funcionamiento muscular, se realiza mediante un electromiograma.
