★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Se levantó un templo de sencillas proporciones en el sitio donde se ubica el actual edificio, y parece ser que fue hecha toda la obra de cal y canto, y techo de paja de dos aguas (como algunos de los templos levantados a comienzos de la colonia).
Este edificio permitiría la evangelización del lugar y las zonas aledañas, cuya tarea fue llevada a cabo por los frailes dominicos. El templo estaba dedicado a San Juan Bautista.
A mediados del siglo XVIII se decide que otro templo de mejores proporciones sea levantado en el mismo lugar, dotándolo de tres naves y una sencilla portada hecha toda en cantera roja, traída de un lugar cercano al poblado. La obra se terminó a comienzos del siglo XIX, en el año de 1812 fueron cerradas sus bóvedas y concluida la cúpula.
 A temple of simple proportions was erected on the site where the current building is located, and it seems that all the work of lime and stone was made, and thatched roof of two waters (like some of the temples built at the beginning of the colony ).
This building would allow the evangelization of the place and the surrounding areas, whose task was carried out by the Dominican friars. The temple was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
In the middle of the 18th century it was decided that another temple of better proportions would be erected in the same place, endowing it with three naves and a simple cover made entirely of red quarry, brought from a place near the town. The work was completed at the beginning of the 19th century, in the year 1812 its vaults were closed and the dome was completed.
