About El Instituto Iguana - Spanish School
El Instituto Iguana Today...
However, space was limited and in order to be able to develop and carry out cultural activities besides the ordinary spanish classes, we have built the new and much bigger "Instituto Iguana" on hill one one side of the village. A wonderfull cultural center has emerged here, just about 10 minutes from the beach and with picturesque views over the village and over the pacific ocean. Since the construction was finished in 2013 all spanish lessons take place here under our big palm roof with ocean view.
The new location features a house with office, guest rooms and sanitary facilities but also a giant 170 sqm wooden house (palapa) with a palm roof that houses a multifunctional room, open to three sides and with wonderful views over the ocean.
Here we hold all of the spanish lessons, but the space is also used for workshops, sports, yoga, dance and music events and intercultural exchange. A space that functions as a place of exchange for different people and cultures and that is, for all students and visitors of instituto iguana, a welcoming place to arrive, relax and enjoy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Attentive teachers, lovely atmosphere and an incredible view. The school is situated on top a hill over looking the ocean of Mazunte. Isabel was very helpful and recommended many things to us. I learned enough basic Spanish in 2 weeks so that I can put it into practice and integrate all the grammar. The teachers are enthusiastic and professional. We learned practical conversational language and it was fun to meet people from all over the world. Highly recommend this place ??

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We took a week of Spanish classes at Instituto Iguana, my partner a beginner group class and myself an intermediate semi-private class, both for a good price. We were both really happy and made good progress within a week.
The school is a beautiful place, perched on a hill with views over the ocean and often a nice breeze. Everyone was really friendly and helpful, the organisation was quick and we got exactly what we asked for, even although we got in contact really short-notice. All classes are held in Spanish only to allow students to submerge fully in the language and have a group of people with different nationalities, which I think is very enriching. Even for the beginners class it really worked having the classes in Spanish only. The teachers are friendly and very professional. We only learned for 2 hours a day which I was worried would be too little but we were able to do lots of exercises outside of class and more than 2 hours at a time would have been too much information for me personally, especially as the climate can be tiring.
Being able to do homework by the beach before class or have a dunk in the ocean after class was brilliant as well.
We also stayed at the school's accommodation which was fairly cheap and good to make some contacts with people. There are only 4 rooms with open-air kitchen facilities, 2 small shared bathrooms and some outside space with hammocks and tables, which was perfect as a base for us.
We recommend!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My wife and I opted for a 2hr instruction period each day for 5 days and we had a ball. As beginners we felt uncertain at first because the course is "full immersion" (all in Spanish), but with the guidance of our amazing teacher, Coti, we ended up having a great and fun experience. She was patient, strict of course, and had great communication skills. We came out more confident, knowing a lot more than at the start and with a willingness to improve further on those things that we learned. A great experience in a beautiful setting, overlooking the jewel of Mazunte.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I brought a group here and the entire experience from start to finish was absolutely amazing. Funny, sympathetic and knowledgeable teachers; a cool, breeze-filled location with a stunning view; and out-of-this world communication skills while we were coordinating all the pieces. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We loved the instructors and relaxed learning environment based on small groups. The beginner level course is flexible enough to instruct about subjects of interest to the small groups. It began with a focus on popular verbs and gradually increased the vocabulary through various activities. Arrange for transportation to get there in English, but by the time the course is over, you'll be equipped with enough Spanish to travel as the locals do. This school has a wonderful social mission and is filled with caring staff members who are improving the Mazunte community and bringing cultures together. An added bonus is the Mazunte setting filled with gorgeous beaches, restaurants, and shops. We are looking forward to returning for a follow-on course.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ During the first week of March 2022, my spouse, myself and our 10 YO daughter were students of the school; we were part of a larger group of 20+ persons of ranging abilities in the Spanish language. The adults were split into cohorts of 3-4 persons, and the children were their own group. For 5 consecutive days, we all gathered for 4 hours daily to practice and improve upon our Spanish. The instructors did a fantastic job modifying the exercises and materials to support and accelerate each of our individual and collective learning. The setting of the school was also conducive for learning.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was part of a group who received 4 hours of instruction each day for a week. This was my first experience with formal instruction and immersion. My instructor Ester was amazing. The school itself is in a beautiful location and very conducive to learning. All the staff were kind and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this school.
