If you are an American looking for cheap dental work and need recommendations, read on. I was in the same boat very recently. Seeing as Mexicans recommend dentists to each other mostly by word of mouth and not with online reviews, it can be difficult for Americans to find a reputable one, so I'll tell my story. I was told by my dentist that I needed about $4,000 of work done, which includes a root canal, crown, and several cavities. I'm young and not exactly rich, so I sought alternatives to reduce that bill. A friend told me to try Mexico - their prices are much lower and the work is of similar quality. I was skeptical at first but looked into it. I quickly discovered the popular dental tourism town, Los Algodones, and a bunch of dentists and their receptionists there politely fielded my questions, so I figured that was the place to go, despite reading some horror stories online. However, during a visit to Arizona which was meant to be unrelated to my dental problems, my tooth began to hurt, and my circumstances would not permit me to go to Los Algodones that day. I decided instead to try and find a dentist in the border town of Nogales, Sonora. This all started this past Thursday (it's the following Monday now). Dr. Gamez's (full name Jesus Maria Gamez Bojorquez) name came up, and because he has many years of experience, I called and asked for an appointment. Dr. Gamez was able to see me on the same day that I woke up in pain. The office is small and not very lavishly decorated, but I didn't care. It is located on a major street in Nogales, an easy walk from the border, and I felt fairly safe walking during the day because there were a lot of people around. I speak only a little Spanish, but thankfully there is a receptionist/translator who speaks English very well and she translated everything during my appointments. Over the next three days the doctor gave me a root canal, filled six cavities, installed a crown, and created a dental nightguard, and his associate dentist gave me a cleaning. The root canal was painless and over in about an hour. I'm somewhat resistant to anesthesia, apparently, but they kept telling me to raise my hand if I was in any pain and they had no qualms about giving me more anesthesia if I wanted it. Grinding down the same tooth for the crown was not fun, but Dr. Gamez is very surehanded and was as gentle as possible to me. That day he gave me medicine for pain, inflammation, and antibiotics to resist any infection. The cavity fillings went by swiftly, too. The only problem was with the crown. The construction of the crown is done by a technician and it usually takes a day or two, so on the third day I came in and when they tried to put the crown on, I bit down and it broke. I thought that I'd missed my chance because my flight was later that evening. They called the technician, and he said he would work hard and try to make a new one quickly, and they saw me on Saturday at 6pm, three hours after they officially close the clinic for the day, and put the new crown on with no problem. It's about two days later now, and I don't feel much pain, and the crown seems to fit very well - the doctor was very patient with making adjustments and made sure that I felt good about the fit. The crown comes with a one-year guarantee. Of course, I don't yet have the luxury of time elapsed to tell you that my teeth lived happily ever after for many years, but Dr. Gamez was reassuring, and I feel that the work was probably very successful. Overall I'm very happy with the experience and I paid about $1,500 for what would have been about $4,000 in my town.
