We enjoyed this overnight tour to the Sierra Chincua Butterfly Preserve. Eric grew up in the nearby town of Tlalpujahua ( now reknown for its hand blown glass Christmas ornaments) which we visited and stayed in. As a 'local' his many stories bring to life the history of the area, especially the Dos Estrellas (former) gold mine that we visited. This museum has interesting exhibits, lovely grounds and buildings kept intactt with mining equipment. His personal connections with the ceramic artist and the owner of the mezcaleria enriched our experiences. Eric is also a chef at his own tapas bar in San Miguel so he took us to the best street food vendors, shared food stories at the local market and got us tasting new dishes. The butterfly preserve high in the mountains in a fir forest was blooming with spring flowers that attracted many hummingbirds as well as the Monarch butterflies. The first week of March was a great time to go as the relatively warm air meant the butterflies were quite active. Its like being in a dream world seeing the Monarchs drift, float and flutter away from the huge clumps of butterflies that they had been attached to. We had the choice of riding a horse or walking up and down from the preserve entrance to where the Monarchs gather.
