About Etnofood
“My sister and my 96-yr old mom and I took Juan Carlos' mixology class and loved it. The venue is really special. The "mixology" room is behind his mezcal bar and opens onto a beautiful open-air garden room full of different agave plants. It was our first introduction to mezcal and he taught us in great detail how to go through the tasting process. Then we went into the mixology room, where he had different local fruits, spices, and greens all ready for the creative process of designing your own cocktails. The first step was to learn the basic foundation of preparing a classic cocktail, and then we got to experiment. My mom loved this part and we all loved tasting our experiments! All of the proceeds of his classes go to his nonprofit organization, which is focused on teaching local people about Oaxacan heritage foods and food preparation so that they can benefit from the huge food-culture economy here.”

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A friend and I took the vegetarian cooking class at Etnofood in Oaxaca the week before Día de los Muertos and it was amazing (shout out to Martin)! They took us through the market la Merced and then we got to utilize all the fresh ingredients in our dishes (mole amarillo, a salad, Mexican risotto, fresh tortillas, salsa, etc). Martin explained everything perfectly!
We went back again and again during our 10 day stay in Oaxaca because of the friendly and inviting staff (Martin, Chris, Ruby, Joseline, Cesar, Carlos, Alfredo, Chocolate master, etc) as well as the amazing fresh food. Etnofood is great, 1000 percent recommend!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very friendly staff who speak good English. Food was tasty but on the small side. Nice little courtyard out back too. As I’m vegan they swapped the cheese on the enfrijolado bowl for vegan chorizo which was delicious!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I ate here 3 times while in Oaxaca. The staff was lovely and attentive, the little garden in the back was mostly enjoyable and the food was good though not consistent with flavor. The first time I ordered Papas con Hierbas and a mole bowl and they were perfect. The second time I had the waffles as they said they were out of papas and my friend ordered the mole bowl which says comes with hongos but they served her carrots in stead which she hates and we had to ask for the hongos. the third time I went with a friend after raving about the papas and we waited an extra half hour as they said they were out of them but someone was coming from the market and they would make them. Yet they had so little flavor and weren’t the same as I had raved about. We also ordered a chorizo hongo sandwich which says comes with sauerkraut but when placed in front of us, had none and we had to ask for it. The waiter was very nice and gifted us two tiny chocolate skulls which were really good, it could have just been an off day for them. The garden that had been tranquil had an annoying digital nomad on a business call talking very loudly interrupting everyone, despite that there is a coworking space he could have taken his call in. I realize that’s not the restaurants fault but it would be nice to put some kind of policy to leave work calls at the door to preserve the tranquility of the space for all guests.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This review is for Martin and his cooking tour/class. We registered through Airbnb experiences, it was a small group of 7 people. He took us to a local market to get the ingredients for a full menu meal. Martin explained to us (in English and Spanish) every ingredient, he told us about history of Oaxacan culture and showed us how to cook five different dishes! We cooked at the kitchen of the Etnofood restaurant. At the end we ate together and he offered us mezcal too! This is a great way to spend half a day with your friends and family ( teenagers and older) or just by yourself, definitely you'll make new friends during the experience. We forgot to take more pics, we were really enjoying the moment.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place especially if you’re vegan/vegetarian/gluten free! Even if you aren’t- worth checking out. Very sizable portions for the price of local, organic, fresh, innovative food. I ate here when I first landed and then came back for their cooking class which I highly recommend.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent vegan restaurant!! Healthy, super delicious, and reasonably priced.
I can't remember the name of the dish - toast with beans, carrots, and pickled cabbage - was great. The waffles with vegan ice-cream were incredible!!
