I was worried initially based on the terrible reviews and overall horror stories I had read about rental cars in Mexico. Fortunately, I had a very positive experience renting from Europcar out of Chetumal Airport. I had made my booking online (in Mexican Pesos) and had the printout ready for the service representative (who spoke English quite well) when I arrived at the airport. He accepted my booking without a hassle. I had selected both the CDW and the supplementary liability insurance when I made my reservation online, and he rep did not try to push any more insurance on me than what I had reserved. He did put a $15,000 peso hold on my credit card, which is standard in Mexico. He did tell me about a "special promotion" that he had for $300 pesos to give us an upgrade to a better vehicle. Looking back on it, I'm pretty sure he just pocketed the money, but overall I didn't really care, and either way I would have been willing to pay the roughly 20 USD for a better car. Overall I think we paid about $260 USD for 7 days with the car, including CDW/LDW and Supplementary Liability Insurance. A pretty good deal in my book. I will say this: When you pick up the car, make sure you check it VERY carefully. I found a bunch of dents and scratches that the Europcar rep had not previously noted, and arguably they could have tried to make me pay for them on return of the car (which is when they checked it pretty thoroughly) All in all, though, it wasn't a bad experience, and at no point did I get the feeling that I was at risk of being scammed or cheated. Getting the car took maybe 20 minutes, and returning it took 15. I think a lot of the bad reviews simply come from people who haven't done their research and aren't aware that credit card CDW insurance and other third party insurances simply aren't recognized by Mexican car rental companies. If you make your booking online, have your documentation, know what's required and what you're getting into, I see no reason why you should have a negative experience.

We booked the car on a german website (ADAC) for a good price. The super kind woman at the desk showed us our car. The booking was very transparent, no extra fees, no hidden costs. The small car was brand new and was very good to drive. We even could store our luggage for a few minutes in the store. Better than our last airport booth experience! Total recommendation!

I booked a car rental in early January for our trip in June, was a great deal and thought everything was all set. We arrived at our hotel, where the rental company used to have an office... Which is where we expected to pick up our car, only to find out they no longer have an office there. We were given no updates about how to get our car. The young lady at the hotel desk was kind enough to call europecar for us. My husband was told that they had cancelled our reservation because we didn't show up right at 0800. We were travelling by ferry from Belize and I booked the car for the morning to ensure it would be ready when we arrived. There is no notice that the car must be picked up at a certain time or that the reservation would be cancelled. The man on the phone was quite rude to my husband and told him he could walk to the airport for a car... Not that they had one available, he said we should rent from another company. I paid a deposit and they broke their contract. Not to mention this really put a damper on our plans for the next 24 hours and kind of tarnished our very first experience here in Mexico. We ended up taking a taxi to the airport and we able to reserve a car from Hertz to pick up first thing in the morning, the gentleman was very nice and helpful.
