★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sun drenched hidden plaza in the historic downtown of Mexico city, where the heart of Huitzilopochtli's brother fell after being torn off his chest and thrown into the distance after a fierce battle. Off the heart a nopal grew and that's where the ancient aztecs found an eagle devouring a snake, the foretold symbol of where to settle their mighty city. Fun fact, the eagle sculpture is placed so high up because the first one was stolen. The plaza itself has a few stores and a apparently good restaurant, but to me the highlight are the benches with painted tiles that depict the evolution of the national shield, said eagle eating a snake. If you want to visit try to get there early on Sunday, like I did and so I only saw a few guys smoking weed. If you go in weekdays it WILL be way crowded and probably unsafe with regards to mugging, the area is not heavily visited by tourists.
