En 1879 fue elevada a la categoría de Villa, perteneciente al distrito de Chalchicomula, hacia 1895 se constituyó como municipio libre. En 1599 se construyó el templo parroquial bajo la dirección de un sacerdote de la Compañía de Jesús, el cual se concluyó en el siglo XVII. Este municipio tiene dos de las haciendas más sobresalientes de la región, una de éstas es la enigmática hacienda de San Francisco Tlaxcantla, conocida como Cascantla, escondida entre milpas. Fue habitada por frailes franciscanos desde principios del siglo XVIII, éstos construyeron una capilla para evangelizar, cuenta con una bella y elaborada fachada; actualmente se encuentra en ruinas, circunstancia que ha originado algunas leyendas.
