En Plan del Río, el brigadier venezolano Fernando Miyares y Mancebo proyectó una fortificación que desde un punto prominente en la topografía, debía resguardar el tránsito en el camino real construido por el gobierno borbónico del siglo XVIII. El fortín de Órdenes Militares fue de suma importancia por estar localizado en un paso natural que permite salvar las barrancas y corrientes fluviales de la zona. Por ello, desde la época colonial se crearon dos puentes monumentales, una venta para el descanso de los viajeros, una iglesia y el mencionado fortín; todos estos monumentos ahora forman parte del patrimonio histórico y arquitectónico regional. Durante la guerra por la independencia de México (1810-1821), la corona española consideró pertinente establecer las medidas necesarias para mantener el control de la Colonia Novohispana y evitar una posible intervención de otras potencias. A mí parecer debería el ayuntamiento darle mejor mantenimiento ya que hay mucha basura en los alrededores. Después de comer en los restaurantes que están sobre la carretera, valdría la pena subir a conocerlo, pero si aconsejaría que de preferencia lo hicieran en grupo de mínimo 5 personas. It is a historic building in the Town of Plan del Río 30 minutes from Xalapa by the free highway to Veracruz.
