Sin embargo, los menores nunca llegaron. Al paso de las horas y al ver que los niños no regresaron a casa, sus padres y vecinos de Xonaca salieron a buscarlos. La búsqueda duró días pero no se encontró rastro alguno de los pequeños. Con pena y dolor, todos dedujeron que debido a la fuerte lluvia, los niños cayeron en un pozo de agua aledaño a la casa del general Ávila Camacho. Al enterarse de lo ocurrido, el general, quien tenía en muy alta estima a su caballerango, ordenó que se construyera una fuente con azulejos de talavera y un pedestal con dos figuras de niños, justo en la zona donde se cree que cayeron sus cuerpos. Se dice que por las noches, las figuras inanimadas de la Fuente de los Muñecos cobran vida para jugar, correr por las calles empedradas de Xonaca; algunos vecinos incluso aseguran que su risa se escucha por todo el barrio hasta al amanecer, cuando de nuevo regresan al pedestal de talavera para petrificarse. The story goes that one day a storm hit this area of the city of Puebla, just as the children were on their way to school. However, the minors never arrived. As the hours passed and seeing that the children did not return home, their parents and neighbors from Xonaca went out to look for them. The search lasted days but no trace of the little ones was found. With sorrow and pain, everyone deduced that due to the heavy rain, the children fell into a water well near the house of General Ávila Camacho. Upon learning what had happened, the general, who held his knighthood in very high esteem, ordered the construction of a fountain with Talavera tiles and a pedestal with two figures of children, right in the area where it is believed that their bodies fell. It is said that at night, the inanimate figures of the Fuente de los Muñecos come to life to play, run through the cobbled streets of Xonaca; Some neighbors even assure that their laughter is heard throughout the neighborhood until dawn, when they return to the talavera pedestal to petrify.
