Su construcción demoró 2 años se inauguró el 28 de junio de 1935. El diseño mecánico estuvo a cargo de Relojes Centenario, la primera fábrica de relojes monumentales de América.
En 2016 después de 81 años de haber sido colocada la maquinaria original fue sustituida por uno digital que reproduce una melodía regional a las 06:00, 12:00 y 18:00 horas.
