Hacienda del Río - 33400 Batopilas

Muy bonito hotel, lo único malo es que esta retirado del pueblo.

We live an travel a lot around Mexico. As this was 2 nights of a 10-day long Copper Canyon biking adventure I am rating this hotel in comparison to others I experienced in the region and the prices paid for those hotels. This was 1000 Pesos (or $50 USD per night with Tax) First of all the caretaker Maria made our stay wonderful. She is from the small indigenous tribe of Rarámuri (running people) that commonly live in the high cliffs throughout the canyons and has been caretaker at Hacienda Del Rio for 13 years. We stayed in some of the priciest hotels in the region that were not much more than a Motel 6 level of comfort but with the most spectacular view you have ever seen (Example: search Hotel Mirador Copper Canyon). Hacienda Del Rio outside of Batopilas was unique however. The architecture is amazing, and the location is the single option just outside of the town which is nice if you want peace and quiet at night. Maria takes care of this whole place so if you want something or if something is not acceptable just ask her and she will get it or fix it to the best of her ability. It is not anything close to new but it is a clean, comfortable, and fairly large space. To be clear there is not a single hotel that I would call 4-star in the entire Copper Canyon region so if that is the service level you are looking for this is not that type of trip. Most of the people are on tourist packages going from trains to vans to attractions so we were the odd adventurist doing our own thing. There is one hotel in the town that has a high star rating and a price of 4-5,000 pesos per night (about 200-250 USD) and I must say we did not consider it or check it out. This is one of the most beautiful little towns I have ever seen but you should go during the high tourist season because the town is much better prepared to take care of your needs when they have groups arriving daily. Otherwise dining options may be limited. I would never normally recommend this but its beneficial to have a guide here and Arturo from the hotel or Martin who you can find at the towns most popular restaurant (Carolina's) are both good choices. Great food at Carolina's and make sure you have Dalia's Sopes (like Gorditas) after 6:30pm door to the left of the Batopilas sign in the town square. And again Maria is an amazing host. If you speak Spanish take the time to get to know her and how her family and people live. Easy to leave with a sense of gratitude when you see such big smiles from people who have so little in terms of material things.

Some friends of mine told me about this lovely hotel they stayed at in Batopilas a few years ago. So, when I planned my trip to Mexico I wanted to stay at the same place. We phone the number here on Google and were told we had to pay in cash in Creel the day before we arrived. We paid 1800 Pesos for 2 nights and set off the next morning. When we arrived there was no one there. Eventually after 2 hours waiting the lovely caretaker arrived and showed us to our room. We were the only people staying there and sadly, I can understand why. The building is truly amazing and the location is fabulous. However, the owner who apparently lives in Creel, doesn’t seem to care about it and has let it fall apart a little bit. If some money was spent to clean it up a bit I would recommend you stay here for sure, but as it stands now, I would suggest finding another hotel in town. Such a shame ?
