★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This hostel is across the street from where in the morning I buy churros. The hostal, as it calls itself, is a door slipped between two large store fronts of contrasting colors. The street front of the hostel has room just for the door. The place seems to me a portal to a different world.
There's another hostel, El Mixteco, on the same street just a block across the street 20 de Noviembre. It has a greater presence, but the idea is that there are hostels everywhere in Oaxaca, and for this and no doubt other reasons they cost only about 100 pesos a day.
This hostel is in a great neighborhood. There are mercados everywhere, and the true heart of the city, the Zócalo, is just a few blocks off near yet more giant, ancient churches and cathedrals.
