I have been an avid fan of Design Hotels for some years, always happy and occasionally thrilled but their design insights. Not the case here: form is supposed to follow function and there should be steak with the sizzle. The hotel at first glance is lovely, the rooms not overlarge , overpriced (a function of SMdA)but look fine and then it begins: throw rugs on floor that skid around including bathroom and lighting that is totally useless in bedroom and bathroom. It just did not feel right and other guests felt the same. Breakfasts were basic and service pleasant but unprofessional. Management was obviously spending zero to set it up. Upon checkout I found that water bottles offered daily in the rooms and unmarked were charged at $1.50 each! You cannot judge a book by its cover: buy another book in this instance

You would expect a place like this to be safe from obnoxious scams, but no. When you pay a premium for a service in Mexico, you expect to be safe. This place made me feel unsafe and I will always tell people to avoid it for that reason. What happened below... When we were leaving the valet parked our car just off the bumper of an either personal or hotel driver on a downhill. When we went out there was no way to avoid tapping his bumper since we were on a hill and had a manual transmission. We argued since the primary damage to the bumper was pre-existing, and the guy asked us for cash but we waited all afternoon for the insurance to show up. The worst part though was that they were clearly all in on it because they were standing around ready to film as we were leaving, stopped us and then all conferred afterwards as we walked off to wait for the insurance.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Matilda. Everyone was helpful and friendly especially Gustavo at the front desk. The food was excellent and the hotel was beautiful. They had covid precautions in place and we felt safe. We would reccomend Hotel Matilda to anyone and would stay here again.

Someone please explain to me how and why ANY hotel can charge $400 or $500 a night in a town where nice entire apartments on Airbnb are $15 or $20 a night??? Makes zero sense from an economics standpoint.

Beautiful boutique hotel probably the nicest hotel in San Miguel. The hotel has 2 restaurant, the Raman bar was my favourite the bartender Alejandro makes the best drinks and is very knowledgeable! The spa is beautiful we had the chance to get a massage, it was so relaxing. The rooms are spacious and very nicely designed! Breakfast at moxi is delicious try the breakfast egg sandwich! Can’t wait to come back here this is definitely my go to hotel when in San Miguel.

It was our first time visiting SMA and we are so happy we chose Hotel Matilda for our stay. Everything is world class, from the service to the amenities. The room was spotless, decor was classy and the only regret was not staying longer. We booked massages at their spa and it was better than ones we’ve had in NYC where we are from. Highly recommend and wanted to mention how great our interactions were with Gabriela and Santiago!

Im not sure how this place beat out the rosewood hotel for best hotel in San Miguel which is where I usually stay. Thought I would try this hotel. Still staying here as I write the review. Restaurants are nice and the food is great. Staff is friendly. Unheated pool, which is like a Canadian lake in the fall time. No hot water for an evening shower and also the following morning. Had to have a cold shower instead. Seems to be working now though when I returned in the afternoon. For the price of the rooms this should never happen. No complimentary water on the rooms, buy for 50 peso, no coffee maker, no iron. If your going to try and compete with high end boutique hotels, you should have the same things to offer Not sure if I'll return and will go back to the Rosewood Hotel.
