Hotel Sun-Ha Bacalar. - 77930 Bacalar

Located just steps away from a public pier with a palapa and access to the lagoon. The breakfast was basic but decent. On the last day, my wife was a little sick. The staff was very helpful and allowed us to checkout late. The room's window is facing towards the corridor. You must close the curtains in order to have some privacy. Our room (room #1) was locate in front of the main dining area and next to the kitchen, so it was very noisy. The bed is not big enough to comfortably sleep two adults. Overall, it feels like a nice hostel rather than a hotel.

I have no idea how this hotel has gotten any positive reviews. There's a reason they charge full price before you even see the room. Paper thin walls, you can literally hear your neighbor breathing, not close to the water, and they are not following covid restrictions as they were fully booked. (We would have tried another room if it was possible.) Dingey bathrooms, musty smell throughout, and windows face the walkways so no privacy at all. We didn't even stay the night it was so bad.

Love this place! Right across the street from the lake. Super cute rooms. Hotel has a gorgeous roof top with hammocks. As soon as we got there by car they peaked their heads out from above to see who was there. I immediately felt safe leaving my car parked in their spaces overnight. Plus it’s a safe neighborhood to even walk around at night. Rooms don’t have a fridge but there’s a small communal fridge. Oh and the water didn’t get hot but it’s so hot outside it was refreshing.

We were supposed to stay 3 nights in the hotel. At the first night, we noticed a strong moldy smell and after some looking around the room found, that the whole room was covered in black mold. We went to the receptionist who admitted, that they are having mold issues in the hotel and said, that there is no other room available. We spent the night in the room. The next morning we again contacted the front desk and, that we will leave, because the room is a health hazard. We had some questions regarding the refund for the two nights we paid but were not planning to stay, which they politely said would be no problem, just that we need to sort that via booking. We went on with our vacation, contacted booking regarding the issue and the agent said that they see no problem with the refund, they are just waiting for the hotel to get back to them. At that point they started avoiding the refund situation with excusses like: we do not have the manager here right now, I can not make a decision regarding that and so on. Well 16 days have passed and the hotel does not respond, neither to me, nor booking. They are completley ignoring everything regarding the refund. They are completley ignorant and totaly unprofessional. Still waiting for their respose..... Also, I would like to add, that besides the black mold, you do not want to look under the beds, because there was three years worth of spider webs and dust mixed with trash. The bathroom was not clean, at our arrival the shower was full of black hair. The dining area is in the middle of the hotel and all the rooms are facing in that direction. You can forget about sleeping late, because the breakfast will wake you up at 8:00 am.

Hugo the owner is very nice. The hotel is very clean and quite and not to far from the city center (5/10min walking). Also the view on the Lagun is amazing from the terrasse. We really loved our journey at the Sun Ha Hotel.

Very nice hotel, bathroom was also clean and there is perfect water pressure. The staff is polite and the owner is happy to chat. You can perfectly relax on the roof. The breakfast is perfect! I recommend this hotel!

Hugo and the staff from the Sun-Ha hotel in Bacalar are absolutely lovely. We came here through them directly and were welcomed with open arms, nothing that we asked was received as too much. Hugo helped organize an amazing sail boat tour and made sure that all our needs were fulfilled. Perfect place to stay and learn more about the beautiful lake and its rich history.
