Correspondió la evangelización en 1538 al ilustre Fray Antonio de Roa, quien congregó en pueblos a chichimecas, otomíes y mexicanos; ya que con su sabiduría, inteligencia y sacrificio pudo consolidarse en la sierra.
Con datos aproximados se estima que el primer templo en Chapulhuacán fue construido entre 1540 y 1542, atendido por los padres del convento de Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, hasta que en 1557 fue electo provincial Fray Alonso de la Vera Cruz.
En el libro “Catálogo de las construcciones religiosas del estado de Hidalgo” se encuentra dicha cita que da razón a lo acontecido en Chapulhuacán durante esos años: “es esta la casa más trabajosa que tiene la provincia, por ser fragosa, nublada y desviada del comercio humano”, en texto redactado por Grijalva.
El templo estuvo administrado tiempo después por Fray Juan de la Peña, hasta 1558 cuando fue atacado, defendiendo su edificación.
Después de esto, muy pocos datos se encuentran que nos den informe sobre la actual parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol. Se estima que a partir del siglo XVII los franciscanos retomaron su misión evangelizadora en aquella zona de nuestra provincia, estableciéndose en Chapulhuacán.
El templo, como vicaría fija, estaba subordinado a la foranía de Jacala hasta el 24 de noviembre de 1922 en que se constituyó el obispado de Huejutla.
Actualmente, la parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol tiene como párroco al Pbro. Alberto Cabrera Ramírez y celebra su fiesta patronal el día 29 de junio.(Monter,2013)
