★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Interesting church, mixed of Christianity with local traditions, sacrificing chickens is part of the ceremony, pine needles cover the floor and all saints statues in boxes around it. unfortunately no one not allowed to take photos inside.

You can go here yourself or you can get a guided tour at 9:30am from San Christobel de Las Casas, that will also take you to Zinacatan and explain the customs and their differences. The tour I took leaves from the cross in the main square at San Christobel every morning and you can just show up. Cost was 250 pesos and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable and his English very good. Many other tours have no guides or no English spoken.
This was a great opportunity to learn about the Mayan culture as it still lives today.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very Interesting! I have never seen anything like it! There was a large festival happening, so, markets, music and the church left such an impression, with the dark interior, smoke, incense, hay strewn everywhere, chicken sacrifices. This is definitely a must see!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Magic place but before entering SAN JUAN CHURCH put your camera in your pocket ?. Colectivo to Chamula costs 18MXP (one way). Taxi, if you are a good negotiator 120MXP.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Do not take fotos from the people and inside the churche. Beautiful churche, atill very active. You can enter for 30$MEX. The guide cost 150$MEX and explanation are more than welcome.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Yes, it is authentic, but somehow also feels like just another charismatic town, and with not much to do there. We visited the church and then went for a healer (shaman) session. The church is interesting as combines many religiones and exhibits roots to very old beliefs. The healer thing was quite weird, as the guy could not really tell us what did he feel on us in terms of energy , or advice… he just gave the same comment to each of us, which made it feel as a bit of a scam. I’d definitely skip visiting chamula as Chiapas has plenty of other places worth spending more time on than this town.
