He was born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas. At sixteen, he entered the Academia de San Carlos. In 1904, creator of some of the most characteristic works of Mexican art, such as Tata Jesus Christ and Los Ahorcados. He settled in Barcelona with the financial help of his father and the Mexican government. Soon after, he settled in Italy. When the Revolution broke out, he lost his scholarship and became seriously ill, for which he was left in the care of Franciscan parents whose lifestyle he has adopted ever since. He returned to Mexico in 1911 and joined the Villista army with General Felipe Ángeles, who entrusted him with the graphic and written documentation of the civil war. Years later, he would recall: “I went everywhere with his army, observing. I never carried weapons because I knew that my mission was not to kill ... " In the 1920s, he worked as a draftsman at the Institute of Anthropology and there he was in contact with the indigenous cultures that interested him; the production he made during this period was exhibited in the United States. In addition, he was a teacher of Arts in elementary schools and at the Academy. His work is deeply religious and tragic. Warlike environments, inhospitable landscapes and self-portraits are recurrent in his drawings, pastels and oils. Despite staying out of the cultural milieu and not belonging to specific currents, Goitia was recognized by the artists of his generation and awarded several times. He died in 1960 in Xochimilco, Mexico.
