In the distant Christmas holidays 2015/16 we ventured as far as Mahahual. The village is nice, with restaurants, bars, and various accommodation options. It is also a destination for cruise ships. At that time, however, the Mayan Riviera was affected (I hope it was solved) by the Sargasso problem. Coming to Janet's quarters (where we stayed less nights and then escaped) they are right on the beach, among palm trees and beautiful vegetation. The sea, however, was not practicable at that time and beside the beach belonging to the cabanas there were piles of plastic ... lots of plastic. Certainly arrived from the sea but no one took away. So the landscape was very questionable. The cabanas are very much neglected, with the strong wind also flakes or other small materials fell from the roof. The bathroom ... a nightmare. I preferred having breakfast in the village. The only positive thing was the choice of the lady not to charge us for the nights we decided not to do. I could attach photos of the bathroom, but I refrain from modesty. I really hope that in these years the situation has improved, with renovations and cleaning.

This slice of paradice doesn't come often or easy, but if you're looking to get away from the "real world" this is it Janet and Guillermo are awesome hosts. They're only there if you want them to be. The cabinias are clean and charming, and literally 20 foot steps from the Caribbean. You can see the entire milky way at night. We found this gem 17 years ago and rarly miss a year. It's not the 5 star your used too, but, it's as good as it gets. Best off to rent a jeep to negotiate the road for 7 kilometers, then you'll be able to get around and explore. The town is small but offers all you need in beach bars and local restaurants. All I can say is we can't wait to get back

At km.7 on the coast road south of town, you won`t find a nicer place or owners, Janet & Guillermo ! - Been staying here almost every year since 2002 - 4 cabanas, 20 steps from the Caribbean, Continental breakfast served every morning, a kayak to use to explore the reef, and friendly dogs to watch the cabanas as well. You won`t be disappointed !!
