In the days before the Feast of the Day of the Dead, the bakery was beautiful, very well decorated, with a good variety of breads. I came to find out later that Pomuch has a deep-rooted bakery tradition and distributes tasty breads to larger cities.

It is a bakery where very delicious breads are sold, formerly in an artisanal way and of very good quality, flavor and price. Unfortunately, those of us who know it for its equal flavor and quality realize that it has dropped a bit in quality and flavor, although it is still one of the best on the royal road. There are the famous camellia legs bread with anise paneteles panetes con Philadelphia. The already well-known "pigeon" which is bread with soap and that is very delicious warm with a very cold soda.

A charming pueblo worth a stop on the drive between Merida and Campeche, known for their famous bread ‘Pan de Pomuch’ that comes hot from the ovens around 10am. A word of caution, there is a corrupt local ‘policia municipal’ that operates a shakedown checkpoint on Calle 12 and the onramp of the main the highway heading out from town. On both occasions I’ve been to this town the local police checkpoint stopped my vehicle and questioned my business in the town (which was to buy the bread). This led to a full id check, full check of the vehicle and review of the vehicle’s paperwork (while traveling with my family in the morning). On the first occasion, March 2019, I was informed my family dog was not properly secured in a cage and could jump into the drivers seat creating a dangerous situation of which they would issue a ticket for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle in Campeche. At this point, the uncomfortable silence started in which they expected me to offer cash in order to settle the matter, I told them I wanted a ticket the officer would not provide. I then asked if I was being detained and they again said it was a significant fine for unsafe operation but I asked for a ticket which the officer would still not provide. The police did not confirm I was being detained and would not issue a ticket so I told them I was leaving, returned to my vehicle and drove away. On the second occasion, December 2019 I was again stopped at the exact same checkpoint, questioned why a foreigner was in town, then full ID check, full check of the vehicle and review of the vehicle’s paperwork (while traveling with a family at 10am). The police stated there was a problem in the renewal of the vehicle registration in Yucatan and to step out of vehicle. I then approached several officers bearing assault rifles who pulled out a binder of infractions in the state of Campeche and invited me to see the fine amounts, they accrued a total of $8,000 Mexican pesos and then the uncomfortable silence again. I would not speak (to offer the ‘mordidita’) and said yes, requesting the fines. The police then told me the vehicle could not be driven and they would be seizing the car leaving my myself, my wife and 2 children stranded in Pomuch. With this escalation from the local cops I requested their names and badge numbers in addition to the name and badge number of their commanding officer and the paperwork for seizing my vehicle and that I would be calling the emergency number of the US Embassy relaying this information. The police repeated I will have to pay an 8,000 Mexican peso fine and that the vehicle would be seized, I remained silent then repeated request for their names and badge numbers (none of the badges on their uniforms had numbers and no officers were wearing name tags). The police would not produce badge numbers or provide their names or even credentials they were police officers other than their uniforms, badges without numbers, assault rifles and 2 beat up 20 year old trucks painted ‘Policia Municipal’ they had parked by the street. I told them without badge numbers or names I would need to use my phone to photograph the officers and send them to the US Embassy in order to document the situation at which point the senior police officer told me they were giving me a warning and to have the registration fixed when I was back in Yucatan. I returned to my vehicle and drove away. It’s a sad state of affairs, but remember always request the ticket/fine, badge numbers, names, and names of supervisors/police chiefs NEVER PAY THE MORDIDITA OR THE COUNTRY WILL NEVER CHANGE.

This was the highlight of our day!! This amazing family run bakery where people travel for miles to come to and I can understand why. The breads are delicious some normal or slightly sweet and some filled with ham and cheese and some with sweet cheese. All of them were incredible. A bread lover's dream.
