★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Disappointing, bland, uninventive French food
Firstly, let me start by saying I lived in France and understand their food, and I’m a big fan. Unfortunately, I think La Vie en Rose has been wearing rose tinted glasses for too long.
Atmosphere- The atmosphere is quite odd, I can see what they are going for but it seems sparse and cold instead of warm and cosy. It improved a lot when the band started playing as they were enjoyable and suited the ambiance.
Food - mixed but generally fairly bland and the courses seemed made without love or passion. The onion soup is very good but the mains were, at best, average home cooking.
The chicken is underseasoned, needlessly cut up and essentially in a cream sauce consisting of nothing but cream. The ratatouille was OK but this dish was crying out for some pepper and mashed potatoes. The duck paramentier is mostly leaves served with a small portion of cheese on shredded duck - just odd and not befitting of a classic French dish.
The deserts, thankfully, were improved. The tarte tatin itself was fresh, well caramelised and delicious but it was served with a chocolate vanilla icecream and a chocolate drizzle - the last thing that should have gone with this dish. It needed a touch of citrous or acid to cut through the sweetness and they delivered the opposite. Even a smooth vanilla icecream or simply cream would have been better than a strange chocolate apple mix. I get the feeling the chef hasn’t tried to innovate in a long time.
The creme brûlée was overcooked and lacked the consistency a good French chef would demand. Flavour was OK.
Overall, the chef needs to think about what they are trying to deliver and balance flavour, texture and combinations much better than they are - the prices are not cheap for Mexico and Roma is a competitive neighbourhood. I’d go elsewhere if I were you. If you do come, get the tarte tatin and ask for it without the icecream.
Price - 1700$ two people with a bottle of wine.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Cosy French restaurant in Roma, it's right on Alvaro Obregon and is a bit hard to find give that it's a sous-sol. Food is good, wine is great and atmosphere is very cosy. We had the raclette which is very tasty.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good french food, the place is nicely decorated with typical french murals and furniture. They have good cocktails too. And the owners are very friendly.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Boeuf Bourguignon is quite a small portion, you can finish it in 3 bites, should be an appetizer not a main dish.
A friend of mine ordered it (the rest of us only had dessert we had lunch in another restaurant before that).
We asked the waiter if the grams were for the entire dish (liquid and vegetables) and he said yes. So don't expect 230 grams of meat, it's 200 grams of vegetables and 30 grams of meat (not even slightly kidding)
We had to take my friend elsewhere so he could have a decent meal.
