★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sobre la avenida Observatorio número 192, en la delegación Miguel Hidalgo de la Ciudad de México, se encuentra el antiguo palacio arzobispal de Tacubaya, construido en 1737 por orden del virrey don Juan Antonio Vizarrón y Eguiarreta, y que es hoy en día, en su ala poniente, la sede de la Mapoteca Manuel Orozco y Berra.
Su origen se puede señalar con precisión en el discurso que pronunció Porfirio Díaz ante el Congreso de la Unión el 15 de febrero de 1877, en el que proclamaba la creación de un archivo cartográfico “cuya utilidad no puede ser desconocida”. Desde entonces, el destino de tan valiosos archivos cartográficos quedó integrado primero al Departamento de Cartografía del Ministerio de Fomento, para proseguir, por más de un siglo, en aquel impulso de acrecentar su acervo, de tal manera que hoy es la Mapoteca más importante de México que desde 1977 ostenta el nombre de Mapoteca Manuel Orozco y Berra, órgano desconcentrado de la Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación, cuya misión es albergar la memoria histórica del conocimiento del espacio geográfico nacional e internacional, a través de valiosos documentos cartográficos, archivos técnicos e instrumentos científicos de medición, con el fin de ofrecer servicios culturales que garanticen los derechos de accesibilidad a la ciudadanía y contribuir así a la divulgación del patrimonio documental de la nación.
Durante el episodio de la invasión norteamericana (1847-1849) el edificio fue dividió en dos, dando paso al Museo de Investigación Astronómica, Geografía y Meteorológica, el cual evolucionó hasta convertirse en lo que hoy conocemos.
El personaje en cuyo honor la Mapoteca lleva su nombre, Manuel Orozco y Berra, nació en la ciudad de México en 1816 y murió en la misma en 1881. Estudió en el Colegio de Minería donde obtuvo el título de Ingeniero en Topografía. Una de sus grandes ambiciones era escribir una completa historia de México, tarea difícil para su época, pues todavía no estaba definido el territorio nacional, por lo que se dio a la tarea de coleccionar todos los mapas y demás documentos que pudieran ayudarlo a delimitar el territorio, formando así una colección de más de tres mil documentos de todas las regiones del país. En 1871, publicó La cartografía mexicana, un catálogo descriptivo de su colección de mapas y de otros existentes en los múltiples archivos que conocía. A su muerte a los 65 años de edad, donó su colección al Ministerio de Fomento, la cual, debido a las múltiples reestructuraciones administrativas, actualmente está bajo el resguardo del SIAP-SAGARPA.
El inmueble que alberga esta importante colección, fue considerado desde la época virreinal, un palacio de la región poniente de la Nueva España; considerado el sitio de veraneo de la aristocracia mexicana. Fue residencia de los presidentes Antonio López de Santa Anna e Ignacio Comonfort y es célebre entre los vecinos, quienes visitan con curiosidad sus suntuarios salones, imaginando los otros tiempos en los que, más que mapas y planos, la corte y los súbditos llevaban a cabo sesiones solemnes, o grandes convites, mientras los gruesos muros de cantera y las viguerías de cedro cobijan el anhelo de aquellos que hallan en la cartografía una ruta para su espíritu.
 On Observatorio avenue number 192, in the Miguel Hidalgo delegation of Mexico City, is the old archiepiscopal palace of Tacubaya, built in 1737 by order of the viceroy Juan Antonio Vizarrón y Eguiarreta, and which is today, in its west wing, the headquarters of the Manuel Orozco y Berra Map Library.

Since then, the destination of such valuable cartographic files was first integrated into the Department of Cartography of the Ministry of Development, to continue, for more than a century, in that impulse to increase its collection, in such a way that today it is the most important Map Library of Mexico, which since 1977 has the name of Mapoteca Manuel Orozco y Berra, a decentralized body of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, whose mission is to house the historical memory of the knowledge of the national and international geographic space, through valuable cartographic documents, technical files and scientific measurement instruments, in order to offer cultural services that guarantee the rights of accessibility to citizens and thus contribute to the dissemination of the nation's documentary heritage.
During the episode of the North American invasion (1847-1849) the building was divided in two, giving way to the Museum of Astronomical, Geographical and Meteorological Research, which evolved into what we know today.
The person in whose honor the Map Library bears his name, Manuel Orozco y Berra, was born in Mexico City in 1816 and died there in 1881. He studied at the College of Mining where he obtained the title of Topography Engineer. One of his great ambitions was to write a complete history of Mexico, a difficult task for his time, since the national territory had not yet been defined, so he took on the task of collecting all the maps and other documents that could help him delimit the territory, thus forming a collection of more than three thousand documents from all regions of the country. In 1871, he published La cartografía mexicana, a descriptive catalog of his collection of maps and of others in the many archives he knew. Upon his death at 65 years of age, he donated his collection to the Ministry of Development, which, due to multiple administrative restructurings, is currently under the protection of SIAP-SAGARPA.
The building that houses this important collection, was considered from the viceregal era, a palace in the western region of New Spain; considered the summer resort of the Mexican aristocracy. It was the residence of the presidents Antonio López de Santa Anna and Ignacio Comonfort and is famous among the residents, who curiously visit its sumptuous rooms, imagining the other times in which, more than maps and plans, the court and subjects carried out solemn sessions, or great receptions, while the thick quarry walls and cedar beams shelter the desire of those who find a route for their spirit in cartography.
