Masala y Maiz explores the migration of people, culinary techniques, ingredients, cultural food ways and political movements between South Asia, East Africa & Mexico. Chefs Norma & Saqib dreamed Masala y Maiz as a restaurant like few others. The restaurant is based on years of research by the chefs to understand the intersections of their respective cultures and the many similarities between their foodways. They cook in those shared flavors and histories. The food is a mestizaje- an organic blending of cultures over generations often in response to colonization & displacement. This is the culture in-between that happens when people come together. The food of Masala y Maiz is intensely personal, based on the family recipes & histories of Norma & Saqib.
The restaurant is a reflection of the chefs’ beliefs that food can be used as a powerful tool for environmental & social justice and that chefs have the responsibility to advocate and work towards bettering labor conditions for everyone in the food industry.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The chicken was an absolute gem: the skin was tender yet unbelievably crispy... And the salt and spice got to the meat. The fusion of Mexican and Indian/east African was just too darn good. Would also highly recommend the quesadillas and samosas.
The maize Panacotta with chai tea was pretty middling though. Would probably skip dessert here

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great, flavorful and interesting dishes. Would highly suggest making a reservation- I couldn’t ever get one but walked up and lucked out. They were helpful and provided great service. The only reasons I gave 4 instead of 5 stars are price (for the portions it’s pretty pricey) and I told them I didn’t eat meat but was served samosas with meat in them. Just a small mistake but definitely pretty jarring to bite into a piece of chicken for the first time in over ten years! Wouldn’t necessarily suggest for vegan or vegetarian as there are only a few options.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Honest Review: Service was incredible! This Indian/ Mexican fusion restaurant is a fresh take on bringing two cooking styles and flavours together. It was DELICIOUS and rivals the other popular high end restaurants in MX.
We ordered bass, shrimp, clams, and soft shell crab. We were stuffed! All the dishes have some kick to them, so I'm sure you can ask for less spice.
Mario was our server and he explained every dish to us and he had ao much passion, and understanding of the menu. He deserves a raise!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely amazing! ✨
Flavors that I definitely haven’t tried anywhere else.
We let them create a menu for us as we wanted to get a taste of several things that would be vegetarian and not too spicy.
We tried 5 different dishes and everything was wonderful. We were super full!
We also had one glass of their sparkly natural wine and it was good, tasted a bit like cider!
This is probably one if not my best culinary experience in CDMX ❤️

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very well executed and thoughtful fusion of Indian and Mexican food. This felt like a true fusion of two cuisines that are different yet share so much in common. This isn't basic like chicken tikka masala tacos. It's a blend of both cuisines and very flavorful

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Love the food! Love the menu. Love the political statements on the menu. Love the cold chai. Everything was perfect. My only suggestion is that they should keep a couple high chairs on hand. People with kids like good food too ? It was hard to eat while holding our 1 year old. My husband and I took turns eating and holding him.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Outstanding! This is definitely in the top 5 restaurants I've eaten at in the world. Amazing fusion of Mexican, Indian, and African flavors in very inventive yet familiar dishes. The soul of the creators comes through in everything from the ambiance, the menu, the music and beyond.
The camarones are a MUST have. They will change your life. I ordered a second order just so I would be left with that amazing flavor! Trust the wait staff to guide you to what you should order based on your likes or preferences, but also be open minded!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Food is excellent. I especially loved the shrimp dish and the soft shell crab. However, this place leaves you feeling ripped off cause the servers will recommend you drinks based on your preference and you trust the server that it's going to be a reasonable price in comparison to the food. However when the bill comes, the wines by the glass are way more expensive than imagined, and much more so even than the plates of food. I think they need to work on price transparency on the drinks and it will make the customers feel more comfortable with their experience.
