First time taking an excursion to Chichen Itza. Purchased tickets on Quinta Avenida. We waited at our pick up location at a nearby Oxxo and our driver was about ten minutes late. We were trying to contact them but later found out we had outdated information including former company name (Lord Travel), phone numbers and website. This was given to us by the salesman on Fifth Avenue. Once the small van transferred us onto our tour bus we met Ku Nis, our tour guide. This next part is very important: He greeted the bus with a "Hello, Buenas Dias." To which everyone waited for him to continue. But INSTEAD of continuing, he seemed to interpret this very minor instance (and misunderstanding) as rude on our part. So he says, "Oh I guess you don't speak spanish." Then he says good day in English, German, Japanese, Korean, Brazillian Portugese and Chinese. Each time he is getting upset because no one responds and no one wanted to respond. To make a very very long story short; he scolds us and lectures us like an angry mother telling us things like, if you are angry this early in the morning, I don't know why and I don't want to know why. He told us we are adults and if we don't listen to him and get lost he won't care. He told us we should be happy we worked hard to get here and be on vacation. He talked and talked the entire way there. The only break we got was when he started explaining about the Mayan religion and he perceived that people were not interested. So in a huff and a puff he said, okay, you rather have a nap. Abruptly stopped talking and sat down and there was silence for the first time on that bus. Ku Nis was clearly having a bad morning and he was taking that out on his tour group which has a huge impact on our experience. He came across as very arrogant and assumed things like we were not interested in the history. I researched Mayan history for months before coming on this trip. Restaurant Buffet and Gift Shop and Tequila tasting were all very mediocre. Chichen Itza was very impressive. Tour guide there was very presumptuous about our disinterest but he was OK. Time spent at location was too short. 2 hours. Cenote was absolutely breathtaking. Extremely beautiful and profoundly deep. Beautiful natural waterfall feature. Time here was reasonable at about 1 hour. Valladolid was beautiful but only 20 minutes was far too short. I should note that at this point in the trip Ku Nis was in a much better mood and did a beautiful job explaining the history as we drove through town. Ku Nis was a very bad tour guide for the beginning part of the trip to Chichen Itza. After we arrived at our first stop, his demeanor changed and he was in much better spirits. As the trip went on, he apologized repeatedly in his own way and it was more enjoyable by the end. Highly recommend to Ku Nis to give a little more time for tourists to settle into the long drive before he gets on the mic. Give some breaks from the talking every so often. Don't insult your tourists. Don't threaten your tourists with getting lost or going to jail. Be nice. Believe it or not, not all tourists have a lot of money and have to work hard and save up to go on vacation. I sincerely hope this tour group and probably most tour groups in Mexico can learn something from this.
