VERY ANGRY AT THE FACT THAT THEY USE (torture and run behind) HORSES TO MAKE THE MEZCAL. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Edit to include response to “tradition”: Just because something is a tradition - does not make it right. Traditions that do not serve anymore should not be continued. The horse does nothing to add to the flavor of your Mezcal. We live in an age of machines - which your organization can rightly afford. My group that came there has seen the state of the horses - and they are not healthy nor are they being treated right. I strongly urge you to change your practice. I hope you stop horrid practices in the name of tradition.

It pains me to write this review because the mezcal they make is actually very good and I did purchase several bottles including a premium bottle. The girl ran through the entire tour as if she couldn't wait to get rid of us, we had one english speaking person and one spanish and some stuff needed to be said in both languages so that both parties could understand unfortunately for us, the lady that helped us was quite rude and rushed the whole thing and just ignored this fact and only spoke in english even though she very well knew spanish. It was very rushed, and I am only giving 2 stars because the actual tequila was good.

We stopped at the El Rey on our way back from Mitla. I specifically went there after reading the reviews on Google. AND it did not disappoint. Miguel was amazing, knowledgeable and took his time to answer all our questions. We were a party of 3 English speaking visitors and Miguel's command on the language was perfect. A pleasant and informative afternoon and we also loved that the property which is adjacent to the main travel corridor. Highly recommend going to El Rey and ask for Miguel if you require a tour in English.

A good place to visit for an initial dip into mezcal production. It's a relatively small distillery right off the main road that has the whole process under one roof. A small nursery summarizes some of the most popular agaves used, with their names and ages to maturity, which gives perspective on the time needed pre-production. A section dedicated to the cultivation of agave is in the back and, of course... the bar is well stocked. They can mail you your order in country.
