★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a great place to discover the history of the Mezcala people and their fight against the Spanish conquistadors. It is a beautiful island with great views of Lake Chapala. There is a fort, church, prison, hospital, living quarters, and a memorial area on the island. I would highly recommend seeing it. You can charter a boat on the Malecon in Mezcala.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Kind of cool and unusual. About a 30 minute drive from Chapala. Negotiated with teen aged "captain" to sail us to island for 450 pesos. Captain's 9 year old brother was our guide. Spoke machine gun speed Spanish. A few buildings remain somewhat worse for wear but interesting. 9 year old gives all his tips to his mother. We liked it. Not slick or sophisticated.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fantastic place full of history although the boat ride can be a little intimidating when the lake is rougher but it's so worth it as a day trip activity. One of the sharp, friendly local indigenous boys will act as your tour guide
