UPDATE: November 2020 We bored Mojigangas de San Miguel to come to a party. They are excellent. They came on time they danced for an hour with the most beautiful Mojigangas. We also just took their class on making Alfeñiques. These people are amazing. We have learned so much about Mexican culture from them and every time we go over there it is so much fun. Absolutely amazing and unique . First of all, Hermes, Alfredo, Paulina and Valeria are lovely, warm, informed and highly skilled people. The filmmakers of Coco consulted with them on the Mexican tradition of Mojigangas (giant paper mache puppets). Meryl Streep also visited and made a Mojiganga with people peering through the windows;). Hermes and Paulina are a special education teacher. This family business and workshop has been in the family for a few generations. You go 4 or 5 times for 500 pesos a person ($20) each time and they have a lot of staff to help. If you speak Spanish you can learn a lot of the history but Paulina speaks a little bit of English. Mojigangas are usually seen daily in San Miguel for weddings, parties, birthdays or holidays. Due to Covid, this is not the case right now. Do you have a steam cleaner and they sanitize everything before we got there and we all wore masks. Also the workshop is very open and they have a lot of space outside in a patio to work. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience with an amazing , creative and skilled family . It’s also great to see how much pride they have in their work and in the traditions and customs of Mexico. You can design and paint your own mask or mojiganga. You will also learn about the customs and traditions of the mojigangas. A different experience. Highly recommended!
