Esta escultura fue terminada en 1899 en Florencia , Italia.
Se dice que fue un encargo del General José Vicente Villada (gobernador del Estado de México de 1889 a 1904) y que fue embarcada desde el puerto de Génova a México.
Originalmente, el basamento tenia un pedestal de mármol blanco con un águila de bronce al frente pero, durante el gobierno de Juan Fernández Albarrán, de 1963 a 1969, la escultura fue reubicada y modificada.
El águila ahora se encuentra en la parte superior del monumento dedicado a los hombres ilustres frente al templo conocido como La Merced.

This sculpture was completed in 1899 in Florence, Italy.
It is said that it was commissioned by General José Vicente Villada (governor of the State of Mexico from 1889 to 1904) and that it was shipped from the port of Genoa to Mexico.
Originally, the basement had a white marble pedestal with a bronze eagle in front but, during the government of Juan Fernández Albarrán, from 1963 to 1969, the sculpture was relocated and modified.
The eagle now stands at the top of the monument dedicated to illustrious men in front of the temple known as La Merced.
