Mukan Resort is an amazing boutique hotel in the middle of the astonishing Sian Ka’an ecological reserve in Quintana Roo, México. Surrounded by the sea, the immense lagoon and the jungle, is perfect to disconnect and reload energy. Food and service are very special. They make you feel at home. Self-sustaining, you feel great and will experience a great escape.

Mukan Resort offers a truly first class spot in paradise, far away from all the other tourists. Located quite a distance from Tulum in the middle of an amazing natural reserve, with mangrove on one side and the ocean on the other, it is a perfect romantic getaway to just relax and be happy one with the nature without compromising comfort. The saff is super friendly and professional and the rooms and amenities just ooze of comfort, relaxation and rustic luxury. Their restaurant is also really good and I am truly amazed how they managed to keep such high standard so far away from civilization, providing their own sources of electricity, water and sanitation etc at a level that is almost indistinguishable from the most developed city. They even managed to provide decent WiFi, although do yourself a favor and stay off the devices while here :) The only thing that bumps that fifth star off the score is the relatively high price tag, particularly for reaching the place. Maybe we were unlucky that the road was damaged from rain but we had to take a car part of the way and then speedboat across the mangrove to reach Mukan from Tulum to reach. This took a couple of hours in total and set us back 200 USD just for the boat, per direction. In the end I found it worth it as the mangrove was quite interesting to me. We stayed two nights in one of the smaller rooms and paid approx 3000 USD in total for transportation from Tulum, F&B and the room. Which is roughly on par with some luxury ocean villas in the Maldives. Still, I do warmly recommend Mukan and hope to be back myself one day.

We enjoyed five amazing nights at Kanxuk and it is by far the most stunning place we have ever stayed. It is situated with the main part of the resort overlooking the beach and ocean with the back accessible to the brackish mangrove-edged waters of the nature reserve. The wildlife abounds and we were able to see manatees on both sides of the resort. There were osprey and cormorants hunting off the reef and a smattering of pelicans, egrets, orioles, vireos and the like constantly within sight. The food is phenomenal and much of the seafood is fresh-caught off the reef outside the resort, which also makes for good snorkeling. We went snorkeling with the staff as they fished the reef, then made fresh ceviche with the fish and lobster they had just procured. The resort itself is fairly isolated. It is well worth arranging transportation through the resort if flying into Cancun as the boat ride through the nature reserve (weather pending) is breath-taking. There are 2 other private residences situated some distance in either direction of the resort, but you do not share the large beaches with anyone other than those at the resort. As with many places in the Caribbean, there was some seaweed on the beach which the staff worked diligently to clear. We stayed during tropical storm Nate, so, as we were told, there was a bit more than usual, but it was easy to find clear pieces of beach to enjoy. The water for us had some mild waves, but the staff talked about the beach often having very still waters since it is protected by the reef. The atmosphere overall is very relaxed. Because it is on a nature reserve, they allow the natural beauty to shine. This is not a paved resort with expanses of decks and concrete, but a place that embraces being barefoot in the sand. There is no dress code for dining, encouraging a truly relaxing time. We stayed in the La’kin (East) bungalow. All of the bungalows are situated such that you can view the ocean from the deck. While not expansive, the room had both a soaking tub and shower with king-size bed. The Bluetooth enabled Bose portable speaker allowed us to take music with us down to the beach. There is Wifi and a big screen TV with Sky TV to keep you connected. The staff brought fresh coffee to the room daily and kept the room very clean. It’s not possible to overstate how phenomenal the staff is. They made us feel welcome from the very beginning of our journey. Jacob and Luis went above and beyond to make each day unique and catered to us beyond our expectations. Not only did the staff provide amazing meals, but delivered fresh cold drinks to the beach and made sure our every need was met. They went out of their way to make each day unique and memorable. There are of course some realities of being on a nature preserve that go with this. Although this was a perfect trip for my wife and myself, the isolation from a thriving nightlife may be a drawback for some. We rather enjoyed the ability to get away from the more touristy locales we had previously visited. Tulum is the closest tourist area replete with shops and restaurants galore, but we were rather content simply staying on the resort and soaking in everything Kanxuk had to offer. Since it is on a nature preserve with the goal of preserving the natural beauty, it had a few insects, as expected. The mosquito population was surprisingly small in comparison to what I had prepared myself for. There is also not an expansive pool on the property, but a small soaking fountain/pool attached to the main house building and a jetted Jacuzzi-type soaker on the rooftop. With the beauty of the property and ocean right there, we didn’t feel like we were missing the large pool experience. This is the first vacation we have taken and honestly did not want to leave. We look forward to a return trip in the future as Kanxuk is a stunningly beautiful resort that truly delivers an amazing experience.

Astoundingly beautiful resort. Extremely private and personalized and not over the top. Right amount of luxury and nature. Staff are genuinely service oriented and you can feel like a celebrity staying there. Food is spectacular. Had the best guacamole here. There are few activities you can do but the main speciality is to just chill by the beautiful carribean sea. It's amazing how you will have the entire beach to yourself. There are two ways getting to the hotel by road or boat. Would recommend taking the boat instead of the car as the road is really bad. With the boat u will get a tour of the mangrove as well. If you lucky you get to spot crocodile or eagles on your way there. The dock where you board the boat is not very easy to find and u would need to get a taxi driver who is willing to drive into the dock for you. That will take about additional 30 minutes of bad road. It could be a bit tricky but with advance planning and some assistance from the resort, it will be fine. Do note though the transportation to the resort are additional cost (was not clear during booking) and could range between USD 150-350 each way depending on which mode of transportation you take. The focus of giving guest the first class service also means it's not very clear to know in advance how much the expenses will be in terms of food and transportation. For guidance purpose for two nights just on food and transportation it is close to USD 1000 for two pax. All in all as long as you have budgeted sufficiently (apart from the room rates) this is a slice of heaven worth visiting.

I just stayed here for 4 days with my fiance. The staff were all incredibly attentive and cared that we had the best experience possible. They went out of their way on multiple occasions to accommodate personal requests and make it a one of a kind experience. From setting a table for two down on the beach, to setting the menu to accommodate our dietary needs, they stopped at nothing to make sure we had the best experience. They make sure that we never eat dinner twice in the same location, as our table for two was set in a new area of the hotel every night. The general manager, Juan, personally got to know us and several times made it known that he would take care of anything we needed. During our stay, the concierge staff put coffee outside our room every morning. Every dining experience was 5 star food quality, from fresh seafood every evening, to very authentic quesadillas for lunch. We got to see the cooking class on how to make ceviche, which was absolutely delicious (even for someone that doesn't normally eat ceviche). One of the staff climbed a palm tree to get us a fresh coconut and showed us how to cut the coconut open and put a straw in to drink the fresh water. Another of the staff swims out to the reef to fish for the catch of the day. We saw him return with several lobster, fish and octopus. The freshness of the food was very apparent in every dish, including a fresh fruit plate every morning. With beach chairs and hammocks set apart in different areas of the beach front, we felt like we could relax in total privacy. They had an intimate rooftop pool where they also did a tequila tasting one of the evenings. The resort also had kayaks and snorkels. On the lagoon side of the peninsula, they had another deck to watch the sunset and had a sunset toast in the evening. We came in to the Sian Kaan biosphere on the road from Tulum in a rental car, which is extremely bumpy, and can take longer than an hour. Although the resort encourages guests to arrive by boat for this reason, we felt that the road was still very passable. Even arriving at night, we felt very safe and had extremely detailed directions from the hotel. They were waiting for us at our arrival to take our bags and offer us wine. We actually enjoyed taking the road as we passed several ocean and lagoon views, and felt like we were in the thick of the jungle. We saw several iguanas, crabs, a snake and several large birds during the drive. We also enjoyed driving through the hotel strip in Tulum, and if we had more time would have stopped to enjoy some of these beach restaurants. We saw lots of tourists riding through the beach strip on bicycles which looked fun. The rooms were very clean and were all equipped with very good air conditioning. It was very hot during our stay in September, so the A/C in the room was very welcoming. We were also really impressed with the quality of the wifi. Overall this was a 5 star experience. We would absolutely recommend for a couples trip or anyone wanting to get away and relax.

The most amazing place in Mexico. Great food. Peace and quiet. Beautiful beach. Friendliest service. Try a classic margarita or Pina colada! Loved our spacious, clean, beachfront room. Saw incredible wildlife. Will be back, one of the top places we have stayed around the world. 5 stars.

Mukan could be named Nirvana! The beach was beautiful. The villa was so pleasant; and the staff was amazing. My husband and I enjoyed this incredibly secluded slice of heaven. Mukan is perfect for going off of the grid - with the amenities of air conditioning and some other modern comforts (husband enjoyed TV). I thoroughly enjoyed yoga, "doing nothing" in a hammock, and relaxing entirely. The staff arranged a fishing expedition and incredible private dinners each evening. We cannot return soon enough!

This is probably the hardest review for me to write. The hotel is fabulous, the beach beautiful, the staff tremendously friendly and caring! However, we were disappointed by the food. Having eaten so good during our trip through Mexico, we expected to eat as well in the hotel. The 200 USD priced food (breakfast, lunch, drinks, dinner included) did not meet the expectations of a hotel that caliber. If the food had been great, it would have been a five star review. At least the cocktails were delicious and the staff (waitors and meditation instructors) were so heartwarming that we almost felt like home.
