About Oasis Surf & Spanish School

Born into a family of local fisherman in Puerto Escondido, Roger spent his entire life by the sea. His older brothers Lupe, Juan, and Miguel belonged to the first generation of surfers in all of Mexico. To this day, the Ramirez brothers are recognized as true surfing pioneers; respected for their contributions to the sport and the path they paved for many to follow. Motivated by his brothers and watching an increasing number of foreigners arriving to town in the name of surfing, Roger picked up a board at the age of 12 and by the age of 16 he was already a standout in the water. Over the next several years, Roger gained international fame and notoriety from his signature style in powerful waves, particularly in the heaving lefthand barrels of the Mexican Pipeline. He increasingly drew attention from magazines around the world with these published photographs, transcending borders and building his tube-riding reputation. Over the course of the next decade, Roger went on to enjoy a successful journey as a competitive professional surfer, supported by first-class surfing brands as his sponsors. During this time, he also began to gain experience in shaping and manufacturing surfboards. He traveled frequently to the United States and later to Europe to learn under some of the best hand-shapers in the industry and perfect his own craft, while simultaneously doing what he loved most: surfing.

STAY AWAY. This is my first bad review ever. It seems too good to be true right? Well you’re right. This school is rated so high because most of these reviews are fake. They are written by the people who work there. I went to this school for a month and it was an awful experience. The surf instuctors are more interested in sexualizing women’s body’s than teaching them how to surf. It was not taught how to surf really they made me stand up on a board once for like 20 minutes for taking me into the water. They even took me to la punta KNOWING I was a beginner surfer and I swear to god i literally almost DROWNED because my instructor could care less about where I was or what was happening to me. I somehow made it to shore & saved myself. They literally could care less. I told the front desk about what had happened and everyone seemed to be angry at me.. because they literally almost let me drown.. as if it was my fault? No. So incredibly dangerous. Also, the front desk people (mostly Betty) is so unhelpful and rude. There are so MANY people with the same story as mine but they do not leave reviews because they would rather forget this awful experience and move on and also because Puerto Escondido is such a small town, they are afraid to talk and be black balled from surfing as the surfers who instruct there are well know as well as the owner. But trust me there are so many people out there with awful experiences with this “school”. Again, I was there for a month, therefore there is serious conviction behind my words. I should have left after the first day but I had paid in advance for a month as I had fallen for the marketing trap and the FAKE reviews. SAVE YOUR MONEY. There are plenty of surf school that are a lot safer and kinder for the same price or less. Don’t make the same mistake I did! The only good experience I had during this month with oasis was meeting Ariana the Spanish instructor. She is a complete angel and an incredible person. She had nothing to do with the school itself though. Please be safe and take care of yourself.

I practiced with Juan today and it was a nice experience. Compared to other instructors he really introduced us into the rules of surfing and how to behave in the water. I really had a nice time. Even if the waves were not that big, Juan took more time to provide a good experience though. Really can recommend it.

Living the surf dream in Puerto Escondido. What a fabulous experience it was! I have booked two weeks of Spanish & surf lessons including accommodation provided in La Barca. People at Oasis have been doing a great job. What makes Oasis Surf School so unique is not only their experienced and amazing surf instructors and Spanish teachers but also friendly family vibe they have created. The owners Sol & Roger are great people and they do what they love and what is right Classes: There is a rule and one instructor is for two students (sometimes you might get lucky and have a private session). One class take last about two hours and trust me it is enough if you put in maximum effort and try to catch every single wave. Throughout the day there are three sessions at 7 am, 11 am and 3 pm. Most of the guys take morning session as the wave conditions are the best. Depends on how many people are sing in, but the whole group can be from 4 people up to 12. If you need any help with anything Betty or Jamiee at the reception are always there for you. Instructors: They are amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and they take care of your safety. You are explained local ocean conditions and what you can expect from it, how to pop up on the board and stand on it, how to get to the line-up, guide your timing and many other tips. In the first couple of lesson, they help you and push back of your board to help to get the right speed to catch the wave. Once you can generate enough power from paddling and get better timing you start catch wave on your own. Most of them speak English, some of them really well, some of them not that well. If you struggle to understand just ask on the reception and they will be assigned someone else. Shout out to my instructor David Luengaz, he is awesome! All the other guys were also great Pablo, David, JD, Chester... Beaches: There are four different beaches where you can surf and depend on your skills and condition. It is great you can choose a different location and different waves. The closest beach is Carrizalillo within walking distance from the school. Usually not huge waves but great for beginners. Should you need to go to the other beaches, they will give you a ride. La Punta 15 minutes’ drive is one of the most popular and also most crowded beaches. My favourite one was Tierra Blanca 35 minutes’ drive. It is remote but this guarantee also emptiness. It is a long beach with many spots so even there are more people they can spread along the coast. This beach also offers ocean wildlife, you can see whales, dolphins, turtles, stingrays and pelicans and this is an unforgettable experience. Accommodation I stayed in La Barca Surf House in of the suites. It’s a cool place with a pool surrounded by palms and lush greenery. Common areas include a kitchen and dining area. Every other day they will clean your room. Cleanliness is at a high standard. At sunset, you can enjoy panoramic views of Puerto while practising yoga from a palapa (the palapa/rooftop is open only during yoga classes). I felt welcome in the house and have met many interesting people there. Spanish They have experienced and certified Spanish Teachers and on top of that they are really friendly. Israel is very passionate about languages and I like his learning approach. We also went for a beer and talked about Mexican life. As part of the Spanish lesson, we went to the local market and I have been shown local food, ingredients and products. It was my first two weeks learning Spanish and after this great experience, I have decided to carry on learning Spanish.

If you are planning to go to Puerto Escondido to surf, learn Spanish, or do a bit of both, I would certainly recommend going to Oasis Surf and Spanish School. I just returned from a 3 week visit. As anyone who has surfed before knows, it is a sport that depends upon many factors that are impossible to control (e.g., swell, wind, tide, lineups). However, given that there are several breaks in the Puerto Escondido area, Oasis maximized our surf sessions by bringing us to a variety area breaks (sometimes the ones in town, but on other occasions we would drive for 30 minutes to get to a good break for our level and ability). The instructors were very helpful and friendly. In addition, for those who sign up for the week long surf package there is also a weekly photo analysis session that is very helpful, as it allows you to see exactly what you are doing (yoga sessions are also included). I was primarily there for surfing, however, I also decided to take Spanish lessons and was happy that I did. Obviously in three weeks I only started the process, but it is a good way to at least start and it is certainly handy to know a bit of Spanish (e.g., greetings, numbers…).

I booked a 2-week stay with surfing lessons at Oasis and had the best experience. I can't recommend Oasis enough if you're in Puerto Escondido. Oasis has it all: accommodation, surfing, yoga, spanish lessons, complimentary surf photos and photo analysis/ feedback. The surf instructors and staff at the reception are all super kind and friendly. I can't wait to be back, I highly recommend!

I highly recommend both the surf school as well as the accommodation oasis provides! The community they create is really nice and has made my stay in Puerto Escondido really great. I stayed for one night at La Barca surf house and it was clean, comfortable and relaxing. Surf instructors are friendly and very knowledgeable. I am getting better at surfing by the day!

I haven't really intended to write a review about the school (to be honest, just lazy), but I could not help but respond to the unfair review by Lesley Ibarra, posted a few days earlier. Of course, everyone has their own experience and opinion and Lesley is entitled to his own, but I just got back from vacation after spending three weeks with Oasis and this is my fourth trip there and I will definitely be back! And Oasis, unfortunately, doesn`t pay me extra for this review (although, of course, I would not refuse a discount for the next trip :) ). So, it's no secret to anyone that surfing is a dangerous sport, and no one can guarantee your complete safety. The instructor, to the best of his ability helps you swim out and protects you from other surfers, but he can’t protect you from the nature: waves, sand and rocks in shallow water. Students always have the opportunity to change an instructor if one doesn`t live up to their expectations or simply doesn`t teach in the manner the student would like. Some instructors, I have seen, even swim behind their students in shallow water to help them get back to depth if they can't manage on their own. When Oasis writes that they are proud of their instructors, I understand why. Further. Lesley describes just one lesson that happened on La Punta, but what about the other 19? Were they bad too? Due to the overcrowding of La Punta this year, Oasis almost always take students to distant beaches of Tierra Blanca. And personally, I am very grateful for this, although it is not logistically profitable, they spend much more time on the lesson than the declared two hours. By the way, writing that people don't leave bad reviews because it's a small town is at least strange. 100% of students are tourists. They came, worked out and left. Who are they afraid of? On the contrary, I read many negative reviews that were left by people who, not studying at the school themselves, are dissatisfied with the fact that the instructors take too much care of their students to the detriment of outside surfers. About the girls at the reception, I also don`t agree. They try their best to create a schedule that is convenient for everyone. Maybe your problem just wasn`t in their competence? By the way, I generally solve all my questions only through Betty and she is always really nice with us! In general, as I wrote above, everyone has the right to their own opinion, it’s impossible to please everyone and, of course, you can always find negative points! But the 1/5 rating is monstrously undeserved, and was hardly objective. Come, try, leave your opinion. But my opinion is that there is no better school than Oasis in PE!

I just came by and wanna to give it a shot. Everybody was friendly and make u feel very safe for surfing, water and the waves. It's like a little party with the guys and they always watch for a good wave even when they overtime. I must highlight Christopher here, he was my instructor and he did a awesome job and make me surf down the very first wave I catch. Thanks oasis and especially Christopher. Keep it up! Thx Tristan.
