Este bello obelisco, de más de 25 metros de altura, representa el máximo símbolo de Jamay, Jalisco. Giovanni María Giambattista Pietro Pellegrino Isidoro Mastai Ferretti Sollazzi, mejor conocido como Pionono por los jamaytecos ( Pio IX) fue el Papa número 255 de la iglesia católica. Su pontificado fue de los más largos, con una duración de 32 años. Fue él quien canonizó al primer santo mexicano, San Felipe de Jesús. La construcción del obelisco comenzó en 1875, está hecho en ladrillo tallado, con ornamentación en calicanto (cal y cantera), y su estilo arquitectónico se adelantó a la época del Art Nouveau. El sacerdote José María Zarate fue el principal promotor del monumento, como un símbolo de la fuerza y poder de la iglesia de aquél entonces, y ayudó a reunir los recursos para su construcción en el centro de la plaza cívica. El obelisco se pintó en color blanco, símbolo de la pureza y azul cielo, alusivo a lo celestial y a la Santísima Trinidad.

This beautiful obelisk, over 25 meters high, represents the maximum symbol of Jamay, Jalisco. Giovanni María Giambattista Pietro Pellegrino Isidoro Mastai Ferretti Sollazzi, better known as Pionono by the Jamaicans (Pio IX) was the 255th Pope of the Catholic Church. His pontificate was one of the longest, lasting 32 years. It was he who canonized the first Mexican saint, San Felipe de Jesús. The construction of the obelisk began in 1875, it is made of carved brick, with ornamentation in calicanto (lime and quarry), and its architectural style was ahead of the Art Nouveau era. The priest José María Zarate was the main promoter of the monument, as a symbol of the strength and power of the church of that time, and helped to gather the resources for its construction in the center of the civic plaza. The obelisk was painted in white, a symbol of purity and sky blue, alluding to the heavenly and the Holy Trinity.
