The meaning of the word Ixtepec is "mountain view" or "facing the hill" is derived from the words Ixtle and Tepetl, Ixtle means "pita or thread obtained from henequen, agave or sisal". Tepetl means "hill of the Ixtle". The date of its exact foundation is unknown; however, it is believed that it dates back to the 16th century as a Zapotec settlement prior to the conquest. This municipality was known by the name of "Iztepeque" going through different denominations, until the year 1935 when it was officially recognized with the name of Ixtepec city. By the 19th century, Ixtepec was an indigenous community whose economy was based on subsistence. It would be at the beginning of the 20th century that the city of Ixtepec would reach economic importance due to its geographical location, which allowed for a highly relevant commercial link. With the introduction of foreign investments, an option was established as a means of communication, culminating as a capitalist strategy with the construction of the Pan-American railway.
