For Toyota, materials refers to everything used to make a vehicle, whether it ends up in the final product or not. This offcut from the RAV4 was once sent to a landfill for disposal, but since 2016, it is sent to PakFab, who turns it into returnable packaging bins. Called R3 (Recover, Reuse and Recycle), it performs better than the material it replaces.
