★ ★ ★ ★ ★ THIS is where Cortez' bones rest and THIS is where in 1519 on a causeway Cortez and Moctezuma first met with Malintzin as translator. This is the epicenter of it all.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Google doesn't understand that star rating cannot be applied to everything.
There is a red plaque on the left hand side of the altar that says Hernán Cortéz 1485-1547.
According to a book by David Graeber, Cortes was driven to carry out his atrocities because he was in massively in debt. A debt that didn't end despite all riches he plundered.
Two lessons to be learnt from him. If you want to get rich, own a bank. If you want to get rid of world misery, nationalise the banks.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The lateral portal facing the street is the original portal of the First or Primitive Cathedral of Mexico, rebuilt in 1625-1626. This extraordinary and magnificent portal was designed by Claudio de Arciniega, architect, and built by Matin Casillas and Hernan Garcia de Villaverde, stonemasons.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Historically this is an important place. The chapel seems abandoned and pictures are not allowed. The conquistador Hernan Cortes is buried there...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ TOURIST BEWARE, although this place is full of historical significance, many parishioners in this church will be irritated if they see you are there to spot the tomb of Hernán Cortés. Even to this day there’s a bitter resentment towards the plunderer of the New World. Even without flash, pictures are not permitted, they will chide you. Behind the church is a mosaic mural of the encounter of the two civilizations. This place is where a causeway once was and marks the exact spot where it is believed Cortés and Moctezuma first met. There’s also a beautiful mural by famed artist Clemente Orozco on the entry ceiling of the church. The church itself is modest yet worth a visit, still, be very discreet about the tomb of Cortés.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Interesting somber and very austere early colonial church that has been built during XVIIth century. Apparently, the remains of Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of Mexico and Aztec Empire are buried here, after multiple transfers from Spain to the New World. There were numerous attempts to burn his remains, so finally they were cemented into the wall. We couldn't locate the memorial plaque: the one we were shown doesn't mention Cortés at all.
Outside, on the church' wall, there is a mural commemorating the historical meeting between Hernán Cortés and Montezuma/Moctezuma, the last emperor of the Aztecs. The mural, titled in Spanish "El Encuentro de Hernán Cortés y Moctezuma" is by the painter Juan Correa (1646-1716). It is apparently a reproduction and it gets vandalized during different political rallies or upheavals.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is beautiful historic church that is very significant to the history or CDMX, Mexico and Spain. The remains of the conqueror of the Aztecs, Hernán Cortés (also first governor of New Spain, now Mexico) are buried underneath the red plaque at the left side of the alter. When looking at the history of Mexico, this is very surprising but as is history maybe not so surprising. There’s also remains of a few generals in the walls along the sides of the church pews. The bricks look like they were built from remains of the Aztec pyramids but I cannot confirm.
