the hostel mum is cool and very warm-hearted. The rooms, however, are not the best you can get. Quite warm and the water did not work properly

Nice location on the shore line, not fare from the downtown (should you have a car). Clean and large dormitories with available/on-demand AC. Friendly staff with dogs and cats - they also welcome guests' pets on the property.

Great hostel! The best part of this Hostel is the host she always does her best to make you feel welcome and is always willing to help! In front it's easy to grab a collectivo to Bacalar or downtown to the markets.

Is this a cheap and cheerful hostel? Yes. Is this a prestige hotel with lots of staff and people in and out? No. This is a basic hostel, with all you could need. Water, kitchen, beds, relatively clean and quiet, fans, close to local amenities and the ado bus station. The real charm is the owner Madi, and what she is trying to achieve here. She runs an animal sanctuary and does events for mass neuter and spaying for the local strays and people who can't afford to. This hostel supports Madi's work (along with her Dance School locally in Chetumal) to continue with the sanctuary and rescues she does. She does this while caring for her elderly mum who is sick, and she always has more love to give. We stayed nearly a week, and while most people only stayed one night, it was great to hear everyone's stories who wanted to share. In order to make Madi's dream possible, come and stay, visit Bacalar only half an hour away, then back for the great bars in town by the water, visit Daniel the manatee and his crocodile friend, then take a tour to Oxtankah one of the largest pre-Hispanic settlements of Chetumal - "Here Where Mexico Begins"

After having stayed there, the other posts seem suspicious, even fake to us. What they write about animal rescue seems like a farce - like in any Mexican household, there are two dogs living in the garden, that’s it. The hostel is really dirty (the kind of dirt you can not just wipe away easily, especially in the kitchen and the bathroom), the personal is friendly, but has no clue of anything. There are NO LOCKERS and no place to put your things. The hostel ist directly at the sea, this is the only great thing there, you can sit at the coast and see the sunrise. The breakfast is cornflakes with milk, soluble coffee and sometimes a fruit. The shower is really disgusting and sometimes there is no warm water. The kitchen was so disgusting that we avoided it whenever we could. Everything is kind of broken, it looks like it once was a very nice place that now nobody takes care of. And at the end of our stay, we wanted to store our luggage there for the day but they wanted 50 pesos for each person. I have never experienced this before and we left with a very uneasy feeling because of this.

We were so lucky to stay here! We loved it so much we extended our stay so we could spend more time here. The family who live and run the hostel are so kind, not to mention all the cute animals. We definitely felt at home here. It's a very chilled vibe, clean and more of a modern home. Within a short walking distance there are lots of local places to buy food, a mall if you need more of a city vibe with the cinema and we spent many days on lilos in the water just a short taxi ride away. Definitely would stay here again ?

Although not the cleanest or luxurious hostel, it was a truly humbling experience to stay at Pause and meet the owner Maddie who is such a nice and caring person who takes cares of animals and her mother. Any traveller should stay here and really experience a humble yet rewarding way of life.

Good hostel for a short stay. My bed wasn't the most comfortable, but the price is really low so you get what you pay for I guess. Lockers available but bring your own lock. Breakfast was included (scrambled eggs in my case) and there is a kitchen to cook. The owner is really nice and will help you with anything, and is genuinely interested in hearing your stories and learning about you. Also, the hostel supports a good cause (abandoned animals).
