★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Como sucede con otras muchas formas de expresión, el catolicismo y la férrea mentalidad de la Edad Media llegó a prohibir los tatuajes, concebidos como una mutilación al cuerpo heredado por Dios. Esta condena fue seguida también durante el período de colonización que precederían a este oscuro tramo, en el siglo XV.
Al llegar a las islas de la Polinesia o el Nuevo Mundo, los colonizadores europeos fueron exterminando este arte de las pieles nativas, si bien, en 1771, el explorador Thomas Cook exportó el arte a la alta sociedad occidental, simbolizando un nuevo movimiento en el mundo del tatuaje.
A partir de entonces comenzó a existir una concepción diferente del tatuaje en Occidente. El primer tatuador oficial conocido en Occidente fue Martin Hilderbrandt, el tatuador oficial de los bandos de la Guerra Civil Americana. A partir de entonces los tatuajes eran lucidos por bohemios de los bajos fondos y artistas circenses, permaneciendo dormido para el gran público hasta los años 70.
Los orígenes e historia del tatuaje se remontan incluso 12 mil años atrás, aunque los primeros restos daten de hace 5 mil años. Un arte practicado por diferentes culturas, castigado durante ciertos períodos (casualmente de fuerte religiosidad) y rescatado de tierras exóticas hasta prevalecer en pleno siglo XXI. Y es que el tatuaje actual es el perfecto resultado de su propia historia.
Tal vez no te des cuenta toda vía pero el mundo del tatuaje pareciera algo tan moderno que de hecho este arte es realmente milenario y, quizás, uno de los primeros en conocerse en la Tierra.
