As far as gas stations go, it's standard. What's not standard is how they con you.
Quick background: bills of 50 and 500 peso are very similar, and a typical full tank would be over 500, so if you pay cash you'll most likely use a 500 bill.
Here's how it works: as you give them a 500, and your attention is still with your wallet for the rest, they'll quickly switch the 500 in their hand for a 50. As you hand over the rest, they'll give you a puzzled look and show you the 50. If you try to insist, they will too. Bottom line, unless you're absolutely sure, you just pay another 500, considering it's about $25.

Not to mention 90% do not pump full litres, glad that Gulf, BP, La Gas and other privatized companies are raising the bar, and paying their employees, and treating them better. Good riddance Pemex
