★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Famous place in Copalita near the Ecological Park and Ruins. A chacal is a fresh water lobster/giant crawfish (see pic) the locals catch in the Copalita River. Some locals say they are protected by law now (not verified). We ordered the fish dishes instead. This is why 4 v 5 stars

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We arrived to an empty restaurant so we were a bit unsure at first. Turns out we were just early for the lunch hours.
We ate at numerous famous restaurants in Oaxaca and Chacal was our 2nd favorite meal after Alfonsina. The Chacales themselves were a touch overcooked for my taste but delicious nonetheless. However the whole fish, butterflied and smeared with Chile paste and grilled, was one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever had.
The tostadas, beans, rice, plantains, vegetables, all very high quality and perfectly cooked. We loved the setting and beautiful rustic outdoor kitchen. This is what big city hipster chefs aspire to do with their hearth cooking. This is the real deal. Only nitpick is some option for postre would be nice.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice local place! We had the chacales, like crawfish from local rivers… it was yummy! The lady was making tortillas and tostadas on the spot that were sooo good. The salsas were amazing and the quality of service outstanding. The city has a big issue with flies everywhere so I can’t penalize this place for that.
